You have been told your VA prescription coverage does not cover Fish Oil.

This is the VA Pharmacy Benefits Management review of Omacor, the prescription version of Fish Oil.

http://www.pbm.va.gov/monograph/OmacorMonograph.pdf

So the VA likely covers this for someone.

My hepatologist recommended 3,000 mg a day. He strongly recommended Salmon Oil as opposed to other fish oils. Other oils seem to not be as effective and are generally harder on the liver. The liver issue is a big one for me as I also have Heb C. I had to have my health food store place a special order, but they were glad to do so. Good Luck.

I am using " Healthaid " 's High Potency Omega 3 brand. It's produced

from Norwegian salmon oil, which is purified for better absorption.

Each capsule contains 1250mg of fish oil which yields 750mg of the

important Omega-3 Fatty Acids: 425 mg EPA and 325 mg DHA. Also

containing 5mg of Vitamin E (as d-Alpha Tocopherol) in each capsule.

Something that we need to bear in mind in the case of essential fatty

acids supplements, whether derived from fish, flax, evening primrose

or starflower oils, require nutrients such as manganese, Vitamin B3,

zinc and other co-factors for the conversion of essential fatty acids

into their active components. So, it would benefit to use a good

multivitamin/mineral supplement with them.

We also had a horrible reaction to fish oil.  Worked wonders in the days of

apraxic speech.  We introduced it and our child had a horrible reaction.  When

the body has enough, I guess even a little bit is just too much.

Regarding the fish oil questions, I would like to refer those interested to the

following literature review by the excellent Dr Ray Peat.  All references are

placed at the bottom of the article, after reading this I became very confused

about fish oils.

I actually contacted Dr Peat and I have a quote from him, " Fish oils are very

good, for fish, but not warm blooded humans " .  Have a read and discuss :-

For another viewpoint on this topic I would suggest you read the following

scientific review.

Beyond the Mediterranean Diet: The Role of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in the Prevention

of Coronary Heart Disease

R. Harper, MD, Terry A. son, MD

Published: 08/01/2003

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/458440

The above is my source. You would need an account (free) and password to

medscape to access it. It may be available trough other portals. It is

comprehensive review of mulitple scientific studies (not promoted by supplement

companies) Including the Intuit study(eskimo study), The GSSI Prevenzione trial

(Italy), The LyonDiet Heart study (France), The Dart Study(Diet and Reinfarction

Study_, The Indian experiment infarct study. It also discusses in detail the

mechanism of action in coronary prevention.

Read both articles and draw your own conlusions.

HiCheck out nordic naturals as they do lots of different capsules, some lemon and orange flavoured. Also look at www.red23.com as they have some excellent fermented oils in caps that you can also get flavoured-Green Pastures is the brand. Both are pure.Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless deviceFrom: "RACHEL" <rachelnixon@...>Date: Tue, 27 Apr 2010 09:06:40 -0000<Autism Treatment >Subject: Fish Oils Hi- I'm having great difficulty giving my DD fish oils as she gags on them- she can detect them in drinks and chews as well.I just wondered if anybody could recommend one that came in capsule form that's for kids and is v high quality...I've been searching around, Eskimo Kids don't seem to do one and the other brands seem to sell DHA & Omega 3 separately (I'd rather have just one pill as getting her to take them at all is a trial)Any help appreciated! :)
