Guest guest
I made a weighted vest for when he was younger, and it had an immediate result. He sat down and played quietly and I had to look over to my husband to see if I was seeing things. It was the first time he had sat still for more than 2 seconds. I took a regular vest pattern, except I didn't close one side. Then I sewed channels (horizontally) across the front and back and put in BB's, and then closed the open end. It ended up weighing about 5 pounds. But as a word of caution.....don't let them wear it too long of a stretch. They get used to it and it doesn't have the calming effect anymore. We found that out because our former church was leaving it on him the whole time, thinking it would keep him calm the whole time. I've heard not more than 15 minutes at a time. He doesn't wear the vest anymore, but he has to have the quilt instead of a comforter because of the weight. Guest guest
Is that like one of those vests, that calms kids down when nothing else works? Like those that they use in jails where their hands are stuck in and they can't get them out. Well sorry but that's the only imagine that came to my mind when I read about it. --- Loriann <hsmyangels@...> wrote: > I made a weighted vest for when he was > younger, and it had an immediate result. Guest guest
Hi a, Where did you get the weighted blankets from? and is the whole blanket weighted or are there pockets where the weights go into? Angel kept taking the weights out of the pockets on the weighted vest so we gave up trying to get her to wear it. I think a blanket would be great if the weights were somehow sewn in so that she couldn't get at them to eat them. Please send me details on where to find the blanket and let us know how it works for . Guest guest
We got ours through abilitations, but we had to keep hounding them to just get them in the alotted 6weeks for them. they are like weighted tubes that go into these sewn strips and you get a pole thingy to push through and pull the little tubey things through, an each end plus the top has these really strong velcro and the tubeys kept sticking while trying to pull through. They base the weight on the size of the child, nathan is using a 6 pound weights, and its rather heavy i think, i dont think he could get them out, has poor fine motor skills, and there is a one year warranty for any reason you are disatisfied you can return for a full refund. I know there are other places too, i think theraproducts.com is anther place to look. we got the order form from nathans OT in iowa city. shawna. ===== shawna __________________________________________________
Guest guest
yoour not a dummy, we all are here to learn too. The weighted bleankets are similair to regular blankets except you can put weights in them to make them heavy for sensory issues. Nahtan is very sensory and wieght has helped greatly during school, and since he is all over his bed and continues to have trouble sleeping, OT agreed weighted blankets should help. shawna. ===== shawna __________________________________________________

How was the first night's sleep? Notice anything different??? You can get weighted blankets from www.flaghouse.com. They are better than abilitations. At least as far as delivery, right a! Do any of you have one and is there a better one or a type that I should avoid? They're a little pricey and I wanted to do it right the first time. Guest guest
I made weighted blankets out of buckwheat hulls. Not only are they good for sensory issues but the buckwheat hulls help keep you cool. Our son has definite overheating issues especially while sleeping at night. After the buckwheat hull blanket, no more sweating. They're easy to make as well. If you can sew a basic straight stitch on a sewing machine, whalah....you can make it yourself. This would make a perfect sleeping alternative to anyone with hot flashes as well. Guest guest
try dreamcatcher weighted blankets at www.weightedblanket.net/ They have all kinds of choices - expensive but seems to be good quality.I bought one for my daughter because she likes deep pressure and to sleep under a lot of blankets or heavy cushions.I haven't gotten her to use it yet - maybe I bought it too heavy. She is in a residential school that wasn't too hot on the idea of using the blanket. They only wanted to let her use it 20 minutes at a time. Guest guest
Did not use a weighted blanket, but did use a weighted lap pad at school and home for homework and tv time. Allie LOVED it so much when we put it across her lap she made the funniest sounds of pleasure [mmmm-MMMmmmm] LOL. I found one with pockets filled with bags of the beads so that you could take out the bags and wash just the cover. It was corduroy on one side with fake fur on the other, and she loved the stimmy feel of it. She outgrew it after a few years, but it was a huge help in adjusting her to sitting still in school. She really liked the feeling of compression and the sensation of grounding the extra weight gave her, and rubbing the cover gave her a way to fidget that didn't draw the teacher's attention.
