Another thing to think about is that you can always give an accommodation that a child gets out of class early to get to the next class on time, if that is really necessary. My son, who has DCD as well as AS, had 45 tardies last year in jr high, so we considered doing that. We decided to give him a chance to learn how to get to class in the prescribed time. But we will do that if he can't do it.
Guest guest
You know that totally makes sense....it is just that I work in the HS and the kids have 6 min.....and sometimes it is difficult....the school is hugh...but you are right...too much time and the kids can cause trouble....thanks... Janice Rushen "I will try to be open to all avenues of wisdom and hope"And, would you believe that they give the kids 4 min. to get to classes. My response:I teach in a building that also gives four minutes to get to classes. Every year new parents are very concerned about this until they realize thatevery year approximately 2200 students, teachers, and staff in my buildingare able to do make it to class.Four minutes is a blessing - too much time gives students time to notice andpick on others.Think about it. The four minutes is unstructured. While teachers and hallmonitors are in the halls, it is the first time for many students to bewithout direct supervision. Sometimes if a student is having a meltdown, wearen't in the hall, but helping that student in the privacy of the room.Students hustling to class, coming from the gym or cafeteria and climbingthree flights of stairs don't have time to bother other students.Problems begin when students have a class right next door to their previousclass. Then they have three and a half minutes to focus on others. Ofcourse, many are unpacking and starting the 'pre-class' activity, but forsome students, it is their time to get attention in undesirable ways. For students walking with friends, it is the best four minutes of the hour. For the student walking friendless and anxious about being alone, the fourminutes are 240 seconds of torture.Only four minutes? What a blessing!E.C. Guest guest
Ellen, thanks so much for your insight! That is a great point about the time. I didn't think of it that way either. My own ds got out of class a few minutes early so he could get to his class, deal with his locker, etc. We only had to do this in high school because the high school is extremely large. In middle school, he did ok with changing classes except for PE and dressing out. Â Roxanna " The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. " E.
