Cheney recommended it, and he explained about the lactic acid in the muscles after my first bicycle stress test in 1996, so if it were a problem, I think he would be aware of it. My understanding of Cheney's reason for prescribing it is that we lack friendly bacteria in the intestines and simply supplementing with them is not enough, because our disturbed gut environment will not allow them to grow. The S. Boulardii is supposed to be altering the gut environment. Causing it to be temporarily more acidic, which is what the friendly bacteria need to grow. Taking the S. Boulardii, is temporary, and is supposed to be discontinued after one bottle. By then, supposedly the friendly bacteria have had a chance to become established. I have not had any trouble with my stomach from taking it. In fact, I think it has improved things. Also, Carol, you mentioned Cheney recommending taking it 2 capsules 2x per day. I was started out with 1 capsule 1x per day, and then increased to 2 capsules 1x per day. I wonder why your dose is different then mine? I've seen > this probiotic mentioned elsewhere as an effective gut-problem > resolver. Don't know how you buy it though. Saccharomyces boulardii is the one thing that is easy to buy in France! They/we call it " Ultra levure " (super yeast) and it is rx by regular doctors especially when they rx abx. I had read some studies from the ones in Sue's post and I was aware of how it seemed very useful not only for improving diarrhea but also to improve immune function BUT here it always comes in lactose and yes you guessed it lactose gives me diarrhea! Maybe once my overall bacterial load is significantly lower (and I feel it already is but not quite enough yet), I might be able to tolerate lactose again, but not yet, so it's a bit of a vicious circle. Still, it's a very interesting lead to follow. Nelly
Guest guest
, I think it depends what you are taking it for. Dr. Natasha told us to take it continuously, along with our Bio-Kult. (She actually recommended a second probiotic, available in the UK, that contains S. Boulardii along with some other things, but I didn't want to be mail-ordering from Britain all the time, and she said just taking the S. Boulardii would be okay too.) I think, for purposes of gut ecology, it's okay to take it continuously. Our timeline for the Bio-Kult and S. Boulardii is 6 months at full dose, then we will scale back to maintenance. wrote:Do you take this all the time? Or just for a period of time?I heard that you take it 3 weeks on, 3 weeks off and then three weeks on again, and that's it.
