GASTROENTEROLOGIST TRENT NICHOLS, M.D., TO SPEAK AT GSDL LUNCHEON

If spring is here, then the annual International Institute for

Functional Medicine can't be far behind. This year's event, the ninth

one sponsored by the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), is

scheduled for May 25 - 29 in Orlando, FL, where authorities in the

field will gather to explore the theme, " Disorders of the Brain:

Emerging Therapies in Complex Neurologic and Psychiatric Conditions. "

Great Smokies will attend and sponsor a luncheon featuring

board-certified gastroenterologist Trent Nichols, M.D.

Dr. Nichols is a member of several professional organizations,

ranging from the American Colleges of Physicians, Gastroenterology,

and Nutrition, where he holds honors as Fellow, to the American Liver

Foundation and the Society of Neuroscience. He has published

extensively in journals specializing in gastroenterology and

integrative medicine, conducted scores of research studies, and is a

popular speaker at conferences and symposiums.

He served as co- editor with Faas, M.S.W., M.P.H., of the 1999

book, Optimal Digestion: New Strategies for Achieving Digestive

Health. This remarkable compilation brought together many of the top

authorities in integrative medicine, including S. Bland,

Ph.D., Sidney Mac Baker, M.D., Len Saputo, M.D., Elson Haas,

M.D., and Rosenbaum, M.D. - to name just a few. This 600+

page collection of essays on the GI system and its connections to

health throughout the body includes two essays and a concluding

chapter authored by Dr. Nichols.

Great Smokies is proud to feature a case study by Dr. Nichols in its

Fall 2001 issue of the Smokies Digest, posted online at

http://www.gsdl.com/news/digests/anti_agingdigest/index6.html Optimal

Digestion is featured in the Nutrition section at our online Doctors'

Bookstore with a link to Amazon.com, where it has earned a Five Star

Along with GSDL's featured luncheon speaker, the IFM Symposium will

offer a host of workshops and presentations by prominent Functional

Medicine authorities, including Bland, Ph.D.,

Perlmutter, M.D., Sidney Mac Baker, M.D., Gershon,

M.D., and several others. Information about the Symposium is posted

online at http://www.fxmed.com/symp/index.html
