Hi all,

My 4yo daughter is the one I suspected to have Asperger's. My 8yo son had been

dx'ed with ADHD and I suspected he may also be dyslexic, we went back to see his

psychiatrist yesterday and were told that the diagnosis is no longer ADHD, but

Asperger's. My only reaction to him being diagnosed was a headache.

My daughter is seeing a different psychiatrist and she will have some testing

done on the 8th of June. After he was diagnosed, I thought, if this is

Asperger's WHAT is going on with my 4yo daughter? I understand the spectrum

concept, but I'm wondering if Asperger's is just more severe in some than

others, yet still considered Asperger's and not some other PDD. Well, at least I

won't have to wait too long now to find out.

What is also confusing to me is how my daughter has been to a psychologist and a

psychiatrist and is now waiting for testing by the same psychiatrist in this

long drawn out process, while my son got a new label slapped on him both times

he went to the psychiatrist. It seemed so quick and simple that I can't help but

feel like it wasn't a thorough enough process to come to a diagnosis. However,

in reading about Asperger's for my daughter, I kept thinking how much it sounded

like my son as well. So, I believe it is an acurate dx, but I just wonder about

the process and how many folks might get mis-diagnosed by this particular

psychiatrist because of his haste.

A neuropyschological evalaution is the most complete exam but

costly (often above $3000). Some of it can be covered by

mental health insurance. A psychiatrist doesn't

evalaute for learning disorders that can be present like

attentional issues, executive function disorders and

various learning issues. So a lot of information is missing.

A psychiatrist is helpful for the treatment of anxiety, depression, outburts and

mood disorders. And a psychaitrist can help you

get your child classified in school often schools only

accept an MD's diagnosis. The information you may be looking

for you would get from a nueropsycholgist. I really think

it is worth the money if your child is at least 9 years

old. You will be able to sort out what is neurological

like a LD and what is emotional (like anxiety) better.

This does explain one nagging thought I had. If he has ADHD then how in the heck

can he focus for 4hrs straight on taking apart various electronics and not move

from that one spot the whole time? Well, Asperger's explains that. It's when he

is not engrossed in one of his obsessions that he seems ADHD.

Asperger's has just as much of a variety of symptoms as autism. Also girls

often present symptoms differently then boys. My daughter is as different from

my son as night and day, but I do suspect she may have asperger's as well. We

haven't had her evaluated yet.
