Hi There... I am completely new to this group and new to the idea of a possible

diagnosis of AS. My 6 year old son just started kindergarten. Just a couple

nights ago we had a conference with his teacher and we were very surprised when

she told us she had some concerns about what she was seeing with our son. She

said he doesn't make eye contact with her when he talks to her, which we also

see at home, but had never thought it was a problem. She also said he talks in

whispers and she has to ask him to talk louder. She said he also takes a longer

time to collect his thoughts and answer when she asks him questions. She said

he has trouble making connections with other kids, particularly during recess,

which is unstructured. We agree that he is much more comfortable with the

structured class time. He loves school and is very bright and does not get in

trouble. But we have also heard him complain that people won't play with him at

recess. We have asked him about it and role played with him to show him how to

ask to play with kids. He said sometimes the kids play tag and he tried to play

tag with them, but he said he got confused about who to chase and he said all

their faces looked the same. That made us wonder, especially now that his

teacher has said we should get him checked out and see if there is a diagnosis.

She didn't give any specific thing she thought it is, but I did ask if she was

possibly thinking some type of autism and she did possibly think Aspergers. But

she also said she really doesn't know, it could be many things, I guess. So I

guess I am just asked for any thoughts on how we proceed on getting him

diagnosed, does this sound like AS? Is there anything else that people have

come accross that can also manifest similar to AS? What can we do to help our

son? Do you have any good web sites or books? I think I am so close to him

that I just see his array of unusual behaviors as being 'him.' But since his

teacher talked to us about it, it seems like I keep thinking of additional

things, like sensitivity to sound or aversion to smells, or the fact that he

toe-walked until he was 4 or 5... Any thoughts or advice would be greatly

appreciated...
