Pink eye plagues Princeton

PRINCETON, New Jersey (AP) --Princeton University has issued a campus-wide

health alert after more than 200 students developed pink eye during the past

few weeks.

The school sent out an e-mail Wednesday which included details about the

infection, known as conjunctivitis, and suggested several preventative

measures for students and staff. It also urged anyone who believes they may

have the disease to seek immediate medical treatment.

The university had 111 cases of pink eye in February and began tracking them

around that time, university Health Services Director Pamela Bowen said.

Another 111 cases were reported between March 1 and March 11.

Bowen said the outbreak may be linked to a similar one at Dartmouth College,

where about 400 to 500 cases of pink eye have been reported since January.

Officials said students from both schools often travel between the campuses,

and their sports teams have competed against each other in recent weeks.

However, they have not been able to link the outbreaks so far.
