His secretary was : nowhere to be seen. I stood near the open door, listening for : signs that his conversation might be ending. My news partner at : the time, medical correspondent McKenzie, was a safe distance : away, pacing nervously around the newsroom. McKenzie always wanted : me to take the lead in dealing with Jennings. " He listens to you, " : liked to say. " He respects your opinion. " : : McKenzie, however, was also wary of Jennings and didn't like getting : on his " radar. " One of the first warnings that McKenzie sounded : about Jennings was that he was unpredictable and capable of going : ballistic - " likes to drop bombs " - if only to have fun at : someone's else's expense, preferably someone senior. This was hardly : the smooth image that Jennings conveys as anchor of World News : Tonight. On the other hand, the other Jennings that I had : also come to know could feel strongly about injustice and didn't : suffer fools. I had persuaded McKenzie that this latest crisis : involving us that had the potential of being very embarrassing to : ABC News, was unfolding rapidly and required Jennings' immediate : attention. In fact, Jennings was the only high-level person at : World News Tonight whom I felt would deal squarely with the : important issues at stake. This turned out to be a dead-on : assessment. : <snip - you can read on line> : : NEXT WEDNESDAY: See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil : -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- : Subscribe Or Unsubscribe To The RFW E-Newsletter and Updates : http://www.redflagsweekly.com/newsletter.html
