I can relate ... when my nails started getting real pitted I began wearing

polish all the time.

And I always did the undercoat, then 2 to 3 coats of polish, then the top coat.

What a drag.

But it was a really good coverup, I must admit. And then I found this emery file

type of thing:

it's a really fine grit coating on a piece of foam and you get it in beauty

salons or supply

places. Use it right on your nails and it helps a lot to smooth out the pits and

ridges (if you

have those). Makes the polish look better.

I'd worn polish constantly for maybe 10 years or so ... last summer I quit. Got

tired of the

weekly maintenance, plus I was having hip replacement surgery this past winter

and I knew they

made you take off nail polish beforehand (little pun there) so I figured I'd

better get used to

the sight of my nails naked before the 11th hour. My nails now have actually

improved -- I

don't know why -- with no pits (that I can see). But the nail tips are something

else; that

white part (dunno what you call it) on the tip of the nail: that part is really

ragged looking

and uneven, on every finger. So I keep my nails as short as possible to make it

less

noticeable. I've thought about going back to polish but haven't yet. My toenails

are another

story; some of them are thicker and yellowish so you can guess I never wear

sandals. I envy

people with " pretty toes " . And then I think (Gillian here's your cue!) hey, at

least I have two

feet and they both work. And then I'm okay again.

Hope this helps a little.

I feel bad about so many having trouble with nails. Guess I am lucky in that

respect because I have worn the acrylic nail for at least 10 yrs. My nails

were always awful and I picked them. I must admit that I have probably lost

10 or 12 due to fungus but probably psoriasis. My fingers are beginning to

look like sausages, but I don't have colored put on them. My big toe nails

both have fungus. I can't reach my toes due to PA so I have to have a

pedicure. I think I am the only person that hates it. I sit with white

knuckles and horrible grimaces on my face. Hate every bit about it. Betty

Thanks for the info about the nail polish thing. I was afraid that if I wore

polish and my nails started to lift really badly I wouldn't know it but I

suppose I would. It does go a long way to hiding the horrid looking nails.

I wear the sandals even though I too have yucky teonails. I figure that if

people don't want to look at them they don't have to. RThe fingernails are

another story entirely. Most people, if they were honest, would say that they

don't like how their feet look. I had really nice looking nails until the PA

hit.

I also have that uneven look to the grown out part of the nail. You know,

where they lift and look like waves???? I do think that polish hides that but

like you have the whole upkeep thing - The only thing worse than PA nails is

nails w/ chipped polish!!!!!!!!

Dear ,

Feel like I am writing to myself - how strange!!!!!!!! Thanks for

the info about the manicure. My hairdresser suggested it to me once but I

didn't know if it was advisable or not. I guess it is. Thanks for the info.

,

I have a manicure every two weeks and keep my nails

very short. The manicurist files out a lot of the

roughness and applies a transluscent pink shade to

help make my nails look more normal. It isn't perfect

but it helps.
