Sunset's future costly

By Bradley of the Northwestern

It will cost at least $109,000 to clean mold from the closed Sunset

Elementary School, according to a report facing the Oshkosh school board

Wednesday.

Oshkosh's American Air Environmental estimates the costs could reach as much

as $452,600 if the district decides to remodel or restore walls and ceiling

systems in the school, located off Highway 110, the report said.

The district closed Sunset Elementary School in February because of parent's

concerns over several varieties of mold found in the air and growing behind

walls and ceiling tiles. The building was subjected to several air quality

and invasive tests as 155 students were sent to St. 's Catholic School,

435 High Ave., for the rest of the school year.

Even if the district pays to get rid of the mold, there are no assurances it

will not return to the 70-year old building, the report said. The costs may

fuel the argument made by Sunset parents and board members that the school

should be replaced as part of a fall construction referendum.

" I can't imagine us proceeding with this, " said Dennis Kavanugh, vice

president of the school board. " If the decision is to put in that kind of

money, then you might as well remodel the whole school and that would be a

mistake with taxpayer dollars. "

The district is not without other, short-term options.

It can keep the students at St. 's school for up to two years, but that

would cost about $120,000 per year. The lease would be paid to the parish

and would not include utilities. The district is renting 11 classrooms for

about $10,000 per month.

Sunset students could be sent to Shapiro Elementary School, 1050 W.

18th Ave.

There is also space for the students in Tipler Middle School, 325 S.

Eagle St. A middle school special education library and an emotional

disabilities classroom would have to be relocated to fit all the elementary

students.
