Hi Michele,

The only thing I can use is Demerol. I'm allergic to everything else except

Tylenol which isn't enough. I use the Demerol on an as needed basis (50 mg.

tabs) - have been on it for the last four years and have had no addiction

problems with it (as evidenced by my not using it for weeks at a time when

there is no flare up of either my PA or FMS symptoms). It is great when the

pain is really bad, and if finances are tight it's real easy on the pocket

book because it's quite cheap.

Demerol can, from time to time, upset your stomach. I use ranitidine when I

take it because I also have gastritis. In the OTC version, it's called

Zantax (or sounds like that). There is higher dose available but that's by

script only. I can't say enough about that stuff. One tablet and in about

5 - 10 mins, no more problem.

I hope you find the right combination of meds your husband needs. I'll keep

you both in my prayers.

Now for our present problem. Bill hasn't been taking his pain medication

(propoxy) for the past day or so. In order for it to work it has to build

up in his system, but then he gets considerable stomach pain and nausea. To

a greater or lesser extent this has been a problem with every pain

medication he's tried. Having an ulcer doesn't help. Does anyone know of

some medication, perhaps something new, that wouldn't play havoc with his

stomach? Thanks so much for any help.

Actually, I take Darvon during the day, and Vicodin or

Lortab at night.. (Darvon tends to be easiest on my

stomach, and doesn't make me spaced out at work).

Has he tried any of the new -2 inhibitors (or something like that)

They are the only thing my tummy can stand and stands it quite well.

I think they are made for reuma sufferers. Aren't they called

Celebrex in th US?

Hi Theresa - Vioxx and Celebrex are the 2 cox-2 inhibitors sold in the US.

I'm on vioxx - my stomach handles it well as I've been unable to take NSAIDS.

The vioxx can cause some edema (water retention) which I have, but celebrex

is probably not safe for me as I'm allergic to sulfa and it has " sulfa-like "

chemicals in it.

Both drugs are expensive and on a lot of Rx plans, you need pre-approval -

your doctor's office can do this for you.
