Guest guest
Accommodating these kids is always a dicey proposition. You have to have remediation involved in the process or you are just continuing the problem. I think it's easier for schools to throw down accommodations and not pay for intensive 1-1 remediation. Well, then you end up with a kid who never learned how to do things or with huge gaps missing in his knowledge of subjects. As he gets older, the work demands will be harder and he'll be even more behind. Without the basics, he is lost already. I don't know the answer for you here because it is such a personal decision as to whether to pull him out or work with the school to remediate things. You'll have to consider what you think will work best. I worked with a mom once who realized in about 3rd or 4th grade that her kid was being accommodated and not actually learning. So we got the school to increase his 1-1 reading instruction so he could finally learn to read. If he did not pass certain benchmarks we set up, he would get more instructional time too. She had realized that just progressing did not mean he was advancing at a sufficient pace. So hopefully she held them to it. In my own opinion, I would get some intensive 1-1 help for him to actually remediate the problem(s). There are plenty of tests, for instance, that can show where his achievement level is in various areas. You can get a good evaluation to show where his learning problems are. Get remediation for these. For instance, if his reading level is 3 years below his age/grade level, you now have a piece of data to work with. He has to gain enough ground so that he keeps pace with his peers. So learning one grade level per year is not a solution, for example. He's going to be another year behind over that year. So he has to make enough progress to close the gap and start to catch up. Also, the evaluation should show why he's behind. So if he has dyslexia, for instance, he would get the appropriate intensive help in the areas that slowed him down in reading. Math would be the same - find out where he is exactly in core skills and achievement level. Then expect to design an IEP that will provide enough progress that he is catching up and not just maintaining or getting behind. Whose fault is it? I think it's a combination. Schools do what's easiest and cheapest if we let them. And they rely on the fact that we are also worn out from dealing with other kids who have problems!! So we don't always see this problem as the top priority at that time. Or we don't realize how the accommodations are counter productive because they just mean one less problem we have to deal with. I know I have been there! When you have multiple kids with sped needs, you have to juggle and there is only one of you. I mostly do blame the schools - the system. It isn't set up the way it would be if I were Queen. lol. We know so much about how kids learn and about learning disabilities. Big sigh. Anyway, you will figure this out! Just take a deep breath and then get started. If he already has an IEP, then you are halfway there already. You just now need to figure out how to design an IEP that includes remediation and not just accommodation. Get a good evaluation done to start with and then highlight his areas of deficit. Make sure those are in the present levels and expect goals that will close the gaps. If you have the time and energy and money, you could work on it at home instead - get tutors, set up a plan, etc. But whatever you decide, use data to determine if it's working. Is he closing the gaps or is he just treading water? Or worse, getting behind? It will be important to monitor that closely. Guest guest
Thanks so much, Roxanna, Basically, with my help, he does his homework. But, tests and work (math and "language, especially) at school are at the "beginning" level. Ugh. So, wouldn't it make more sense for me to find a place that could test him "academically" outside of the school? Or do I ask the school to do it. Although they've been very nice, I don't see a lot of "work" on their part. And I can see a needed test being put off until May. he he. If you agree that I find an outside source, what would I look for? He was dx'd originally through a Child Psych. Would I possibly contact them and then,,,,ask what? That he be tested for his academci ability or lack thereof????? Robin ......A rich man is not one who has the most, but who needs the least..... Guest guest
The hardest thing for me too was making the decision to pull my son out. Making a major change, deciding to do it. Fortunately/unfortunately he made the decision for us by ramping up the aggression at school to the point that we couldn't safely leave him there. I was so distraught with the whole process and it was so damn hard. So, so, SO much better now, out of school. The decision was agonizing though, worrying about if it was actually the right decision. UGH. Brings back nightmares just thinking about it all! P.S. We are having our LAST IEP meeting ever for my son in the next two months.!!!!! The last one. The last one ever. He has two high school classes left and we are done with the school district!!!!! Independent studies. Woo hoo!!!! I can't believe it is actually going to finally end with them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guest guest
Oh Debra.....I'm sooo happy for you!!!!I'm not glad to hear that making the choice was horribly hard for you, but it's nice to NOT feel alone. At the time, when I decided to pull Ian out, it was horrible. Not for academic reasons,,,,but socially. I finally realized that if his only social interaction was negative, then he was OUT. Once the decision was made, man, did we feel good. Even though we had 3 more months left of school. I could feel his calmness. Sigh. But knowing that if I pull Jack, it's not for social so much, but for academic reasons....this is different. I knew that when I pulled Ian, he's still learn....just in a different way. But I was so anxious to get him out of a situation where he was always alone and sad and angry...... What do I say to myself now? What if Jack can't learn even with me? Part of me says that if he still can't learn if home with me, then at least he's home getting 1-1 attention, so it's GOOD thing. But,,,,the other part of me thinke we should give 6th grade a GO and see if he really gets the rooms with the aide and notes given to him at the beginning of classes help him. If it doesn't work, we pull him after XMAS so that he gets 4 months to try it. We wouldn't get into the Virtual school by then, and would have to wait till his 7th grade, but I'm wondering if what he'd do better at would be to totally homeschool him and go over all the stuff he's been suffereing through....and try to catch him up on our own. Sigh....... Does anyone have any kids who have been totallly behind with academcis? What have you done and what are you doing? Guest guest
Wish I had your weather. Last week it was -10 here then we had a major snow storm a couple of days later. :-( We're supposed to be hit with 15-20 " of snow today and tomorrow. That's on top of the 4' that is already on the ground. The schools have had 3 snow days plus 2 early dismissals and 1 late start in the past 2 weeks. I'm guessing that tomorrow is another snow day for the schools. We get snow in my area (Boston) but this is like getting a whole season's worth of snow in one 3 week period. It's getting tough shovelling because there's no place left to put it. I'm counting the days to spring. Guest guest
Hee hee. Caroline, I hear ya about no room left to put the snow. hehe. The part that ticks me off the most is something that I should be grateful for and just shut up, but man,,,,,it's horrible. It's when the darned (and wonderful) snowplows come through and pile 4 feet of snow at the edge of your driveway. Either right after you've shoveled or right before you need to leave. Thanks, buddy. And, it is 10 p.m. and my son has gone out to get his two friends to come sleep over....omg. And, would you believe...he has a girlfriend. Wow. What a difference in him....he even shoveled half the drive way and made his own lunch of soup and mozzrella sticks. Growing up and maturing. ! And, he is growing...6' tall and in 9th grade. He is doing okay in school for someone who doesn't study...80 in history and English, 86 in Algebra and 95 in REading. Not bad! Guest guest
Jan, This is great! I'm happy for you. I hope one day I can post things like this with my son. Guest guest
I have had to have an advocate since I had a diagnostician try to prove that my daughters issues are due to her parents issues.... We haven't even finished the initial ARD yet because we had to hospitalize my daughter for further epilepsy testing last week.... UGGH, I understand fighting with people that only want to do the bare minimum (I have been told that the Least restrictive environment for my daughter is at home instead of in their preschool program!)CarolynFrom: and/or Robin Lemke <jrisjs@...> Cc: Sent: Wednesday, February 2, 2011 8:58 PMSubject: Re: ( ) Sort of Changed topic / WAS : son depressed?/online schools Well,,,,good luck with tomorrow. Where is the teaching in that? If you would do that, why not call it homeschooling vs. e-schooling. I guess because someone else is grading your work? I'd take the extra time to find an e-school with live teaching if that is what is important to you. I haven't seen the other kind. Guest guest
I think we should all get advocates from the start. I wish I had. Maybe things wouldn't have gotten this bad, I am too much of a softy sometimes trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. But too often it has bit me in the butt. This will be the first time I've ever taken an advocate to a meeting. But I'm DONE with this school. Six suspensions from August to Dec and being threatened with juvenille authorities if I didn't pick up my son who was only refusing to do his work, yeah I'm done! It is such a shame that we have to go this far. ne From: Roxanna <MadIdeas@...>Subject: Re: ( ) Re: son depressed?/online schools Date: Wednesday, January 19, 2011, 8:21 AM Yikes, I wouldn't recommend a school that just sent assignments to you online. But, now that he is a teen...we still deal with teen issues ...laziness, talking back, wearing pants too low. But all in all it has been good. And, no matter when we have fought..he always yells Good Night ...luv ya. And when I drop him off at school...he never gets out w/out saying...Love ya. I have calmed down a bit and let him do his thing...and if he gets an 80 well he gets an 80...I personally think he can do so much better...but I am picking my battles. Last week it was -10 here then we had a major snow storm a couple of days later. :-( We're supposed to be hit with 15-20" of snow today and tomorrow. Guest guest
I suppose it would matter why he writes so slowly as to whether he needs OT for it or not. Is his thinking going that speed? Or is his physical ability to write causing him to go so slowly? When you mentioned he has trouble with periods and stuff - my ds's have all done that too. I think now with my youngest ds and handwriting issues, that he doesn't even pay attention to the capital letters, periods, etc. He is so focused on forming the letters instead. But I remember my other 2 ds's doing the same thing. It was interesting as I was reading this book on visual processing issues, the author said something about how these same skills used for fine motor are used in social skills. When a child no longer has to watch their feet to walk, for instance, they socially are able to notice other aspects of where they are going. There seems to be some link between noticing details and producing details. I need to read it again. I probably did a hatchet job on what she actually said. lol. But I found it curious. Guest guest
Well, that may be true. My ds writes very slowly too. I don't feel like he is slow at processing information and testing does not show that he is slow at processing speed. But he seems slow at remembering how to form the letters. So in order to write, he has to think of what he wants to say and also how to form each letter as he goes. It is hard to watch him write because he is so slow and has to work so hard at it. Sometimes he forgets what he wants to write next in his effort to write the word he is working on.
