Guest guest
I don’t know how you guys do it. I am originally from Oklahoma where we can have yucky winters – last winter was horrible and while this winter started out not bad the last 10 days have been horrible with another major winter storm coming on Tuesday. I now live in Houston which even had below freezing temps this past week. Of course, I missed it as I had to come to Hawaii to help with a new grandbaby. LOL! Last week it was -10 here then we had a major snow storm a couple of days later. :-( We're supposed to be hit with 15-20 " of snow today and tomorrow. That's on top of the 4' that is already on the ground. The schools have had 3 snow days plus 2 early dismissals and 1 late start in the past 2 weeks. I'm guessing that tomorrow is another snow day for the schools. We get snow in my area (Boston) but this is like getting a whole season's worth of snow in one 3 week period. It's getting tough shovelling because there's no place left to put it. I'm counting the days to spring. Guest guest
That is interesting and makes sense. He writes very neatly......the letters are big, though. He writes soooo slowly and is, like you said, concentrating so much on just getting the task done, that crap - periods, comma's and capitals don't enter the pix. Is you son still struggling with this or has he gotten better? Robin ......A rich man is not one who has the most, but who needs the least..... Guest guest
Ok.... So, to all of you who have been responding and helping me with my issues and my son who has processing issues and ADHD. He has an IEP.......but still stuggles humongously with Math, spelling, is veryyyyy slow when writing, answering things.........etc. Anyway, I looked up his IEP and found that they say in the SUMMARY OF CURRENT EVALUATION: "He often does not complete his work without adult assistance in staying on task. Jack also needs adult prompts to befin work, and often needs an adult to help him break his work into steps so that he can do it. He appears to be a very capable, hands-on-learner, who does well when he can focus and understand the material. Jack does best in a destraction-free structured environment." He's also listed as "Other health impairment". Then,,,,a page later when it asks 'if the child met criteria for one or more of the above impairment areas, does the student have needs that cannot be met in general education? It is checked YES. Then says: "Jack will need an adult to help him learn to stay focused and complete work. He may also need assistance with organization and initiation of tasks, as well as with following directions in the regular classroom. Hi will benefit from being in a co-taught classroom." So,,,,,,,in the IEP meeting, I remember asking about this part when it was talked about. They said that he is helped with his teacher and she can provide help when needed. I just agreed. Dammmmmmit. She is a really nice lady and I think she really does help when she can.....but dammittt........... Why is he NOT in the co-taught (teacher and aide) classroom? Ugh. And,,,,with him still not getting what he's doing....and not really improving.........does it make sense that he's not getting enough? Right?I hope I'm not bugging anyone with my ranting. I'm trying to write out things....and make notes so that I have my "case" better when we meet. Anywho - Near the end of the IEP, his goals are listed and I gotta say that I'm embarrassed that I allowed this crap. Until someone mentioned in a previous post that it should be listed HOW he will be evaluated, etc...to PROVE he's making progress.....darnit. I'm starting to see that his IEP was mainly for trying to keep him focused. Not really academically....or at least that his academic problems weren't really being taken too seriously. Anyway,,,,,,The MEASUREABLE ANNUAL ACADEMIC OR FUNCTIONAL GOAL 1: "Jack will remain on task and work independently with 80% accuracy as measured by a social skills rating form." Guest guest
No, it is not bad. I also remember cringing when I saw the school’s number show up on the caller ID. I remember when my son was in elementary school – it seemed like the assistant principal called me at the same time whenever there was an incident. I remember being paged overhead for a phone call, noting what time it was, and just answering the phone, “Hi, Mr. X, what happened today?†I am so glad we are past that now (he is almost 21). And, kind of surprised I can even remember it as I have blocked many of those memories out. LOL. Guest guest
So the big question is - are they filling out a social skill rating form? How often? Can you see them, have copies of them? I bet they don't even bother with an actual form. You probably just get standard, "MP" every quarter for "making progress" or "AP" for "adequate progress." To have goals that are measurable, you need a beginning and an end. For instance, he can't pay attention but for how long? A goal should list the data - the fact. He can't pay attention how, when? For instance, the goal could begin by stating a fact, "Jack can maintain his attention to the task for 5 seconds during writing activities." This sets the baseline. Then the goal should say what will be done to help him improve (with verbal or visual prompts, or whatever is going to be done) and what the outcome will be (increase it to XX seconds). And yes, they are suggesting that he needs a lot more 1-1 attention so if he is not in a class with an aide available, he is probably not getting what he needs unless the teacher is spending a lot of extra time on just his needs. It seems to say he needs a more restrictive setting - that his needs cannot be met in the regular classroom? Do they have smaller classrooms with the sped teacher? At our school, my ds would have some classes with the regular teacher/classroom but some were spent in the sped room for 1-1 or small group help. If they don't have this, you can request it. Think outside the box and not just what they already have in place. If he has a need not being addressed because they just don't have anything set up to deal with that kind of thing, they still need to figure out how to deal with that kind of thing. Right? I hope I'm not bugging anyone with my ranting.
Thanks, Roxanna, I'm keeping this and making my "list" of what to do. Thanks for all the advice. Robin "I'm singing....
