Guest guest
Hi Kathy. I do know that it is different in most cases.. For my son he began to have what is called patechia on random places on his body. Then he started bruising more and it would take longer for them to go away, he began to get lethargic and then he started getting sick more often. At the time he had an identical twin brother so I was able to compare the bruising and illnesses. This happend over a 6 month period but our pediatrician was awesome and was tracking all the " little " signs that were happening and as things began to occur more often he ordered blood work. For another friend of mine his showed up in blood work after being hospitalized for pneumonia. He may have had some of the other symptoms but they were not as profound and actually the counts were signs of " pre-leukemia " . I know that through the research I did online there are different sites that will share types of symptoms to look for. I hope this is helpful. My daughter is generally the healthiest person in our house, witht he exception of the surgeries she has had. This week we've all had various degrees of a cold and she has it now. She has not had a fever, just runny nose, leaking eyes. No cough either. Today she went to school and they called to say she was tired and had a headache. She fell asleep in class! Apparently the lesson on WW1 was boring. She came home early and had a Dunkin Donuts coolatta and hung out. I am on the way to the docs now since I think she has pinkeye. But I have been thinking that she has been a bit more tired than usual lately. Well actually she did just start her period. I dont know its like its been awhile since her last surgery and its been so good that you think another bomb is gonna drop, you know? > > Kathy > > mom to 15 >
Guest guest
My son started complaining about his knee and ankle hurting. As time went on, the petechaie (red dots) started to surface. I did also notice he was becoming more tired and taking little naps in the car. His major symptom was definitely joint pain. The orthopedic doctor even put a cast on his ankle for three weeks because he was complaining so much about his ankle hurting. Once the cast came off and he was still in pain, I knew in my heart he had leukemia. I always wish I would have spoken up about my fears to the doctors earlier. I guess I was just in denial. To ease your worry, ask for bloodwork to be done and continue to monitor her symptoms. Hopefully, all will turn out well for your daughter. Guest guest
My daughter complained of a sore ankle for a couple of months and then developed Petechia (little red dots under the surface of the skin resembles a rash but not raised). She also had dizzy spells. If I were you I would ask for some blood work done. My daughter does get sickly at the start of some of her periods but not every month. is now 21 she was 15 when she was diagnosed with Leukemia. ette From: Kathy sen <northnr@...> Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2009 4:22:47 PMSubject: [ ] First signs of leukemia I know I am probably just being a worry wart but what were the first symptoms of leukemia that your child showed? Guest guest
had off and on illnesses before diagnosis, which was a sign but no one caught on to that. The first symptoms we recognized was that he developed petechia and I knew those under the skin blood dots were a bad sign, so we headed to the ER. He also had a couple of sores on his skin. If you are worried, ask them to do a CBC blood test. It will show if anything is out of whack with her blood counts; leukemia usually involves an incredibly high white count with low hemoglobin and platelets. Guest guest
My daughter was in her late 20's when AML first appeared, so this may not relate to younger children. She was with us, rather than at her own apartment an hour away and we were walking out to the car to go visit her grandmother. She was very frustrated because she kept dropping the magazine she was carrying. After a call to her Mom, it was straight to the ER where they diagnosed the AML. The pre-cursor, perhaps was a rare autoimmine disease, poderma gangranosam, which most physicians never see. That was a while before and she had wonderfully recovered from that. Today she is healthy, active, and living a good life in her own apartment .. with a few hours of life skills help weekly and continued closeness to her family.
