The Bug Stops Here! Free Book Provides Safe Alternatives (Marne, Michigan - Earth Day - April 22, 2002) In 1993 the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) formally agreed to find safe alternatives to pesticides in the battle to control pests. Steve Tvedten, a long time proponent for the use of safe alternatives to control and manage all types of pests, officially released his free book on Earth Day 2002 titled The Bug Stops Here, which in many cases provides safe alternatives that can be used in place of registered pesticides. When asked why he decided to provide his book to the world for free, Tvedten responded " Well, I thought a lot about it and decided to give it free to the world much the same as lin gave the world the lin Stove - because it would help save the environment around us. Just as the stove reduced the use of wood to keep homes warm, the use of the many alternatives listed in my book will reduce the use of poisons throughout the world. " Tvedten goes on to say that " It absolutely amazes people during my travels when I explain some of the statistics regarding the use of pesticides as it relates to agriculture. For instance, since synthetic pesticide poisons were introduced into agriculture at the end of World War II, total crop losses due to insect damage have almost doubled despite a tenfold increase in the use of insecticide poisons. When I begin to go into the statistics about the health issues and tragedies that are documented using poisonous pesticides, the amazement quickly turns to real concern because they begin to realize how the extensive use of these poisons affects ALL of us. " When Tvedten was asked what he expects to accomplish with the release of The Bug Stops Here for free, he stated in a simple, matter-of-fact manner that " It will save the lives of many people and make the earth a safer place to live. In short, it will help change the lives of everyone who reads the book - one step at a time, one day at a time!
