Detroit Students to Lead Effort to Restore Elementary School Greenhouse At

Community Clean-Up April 20

DETROIT, April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Vetal Middle School in Detroit's

Brightmoor Community has not had a functional greenhouse in over 25 years.

Although attached to the science classroom, the greenhouse has instead

become an eyesore of a storage room where mildew and mold grow instead of

greenery that can teach students about photosynthesis and botany. Utilizing

the middle school students at Vetal, the Student Ministries of Rosedale Park

Baptist Church, now in the fourth year of a long term ``adoption'' of Vetal,

is the major partner in this effort to ``restore life'' to the Greenhouse

and the students.

This three-phase project begins with a massive community clean-up on

Saturday, April 20, 2002. The idea to do something about the greenhouse is

not a new one, says the school's building engineer, but they all seem to

shrink back once they actually see the interior of the greenhouse. ``It's

definitely a 'faith-sized' project,'' says Student Ministries Pastor Dennis

Talbert. The clean-up will also be open to community residents who want to

participate. Later phases will include replacement of broken glass panes and

weakened wooden beams and panels.

Gaston, Education Director explains the philosophy of the Student

Ministries department of Rosedale. ``Our goal is to make an impact through

service, working to ensure the best possible education for our students.''

Often urban schools do not have access to the best equipment and facilities

and it's the students who suffer as a result. Rosedale is offering residents

an opportunity to impact their own community in this joint venture that can

literally ``restore life'' and enhance the education of our youth.

Free refreshments will be distributed among those who give up a portion of

their Saturday to help in this worthwhile community service project. Diverse

groups ranging from Boysville of Michigan and Vetal's own Harambee

Club will join Rosedale and other community volunteers.
