Guest guest
HI , I would say this is up to how you feel. Do you feel a need to continue seeing this dr? I used to go years ago. I desparately needed it then as my life was in turmoil. I was not even diagnosed then, but had many other issues to deal with. i stopped going about 8 years ago. I learned what I needed and took it with me and use it every day. > > HI > How many of you are seeing a psychologist if you don't mind my asking? Did this help you or do you think it was a waste of time? How long are we suppose to be seeing one if we do? I have on but he keeps telling me that i have a good and postive attitude and that i will be okay with this condition and there will be times that i will have flareups and let downs. If he says this don't you think I could save money by not having to go to hime anymore? Any suggestions out there? > >
Guest guest
I saw a psychologist for a year and a half when my first marriage of 18 years was collapsing. After spending $15,000 for 2-3 sessions per week, my take-away from the counseling was basically that you can't change anyone but yourself. My issues were marital, although fibro played a huge part since my ex did not understand my illness and would ridicule and mock me for what was considered almost like hypochondria at that time, or even kind of a mental illness. This was in the 1980's, so not much was known about FMS/CFIDS. If you don't have any more " issues " to discuss with the psychologist, you could probably save the money. If your life is in turmoil, you may still need the support. There are so many different kinds of counseling going on these days. Some counselors are more helpful than others. A lot has to do with the how the personalities of the patient and the psychologist interact. (BTW, I have a B.A. in psychology, but never got an advanced degree to go into counseling. Just learned enough to be dangerous....ha.)
Guest guest
P.S. In the course of my lengthy fibro experience (25 years to date), I also was required by an M.D. to see a psychiatrist in order to get a prescription for an antidepressant (Pamelor) that was supposed to help me sleep. The whole thing turned into a disaster, as I had a horrible reaction to Pamelor and the shrink was extremely rude and wanted to triple my dose of this drug despite the awful and terrifying experience I had. Then he wanted me to try Lithium. I read the side effects of this and it scared me silly, so I quit seeing him! Later, I found many regular docs who were able to prescribe sleep meds and/or antidepressants without seeing a psychiatrist.
Guest guest
, I've seen a therapist in the past and still go back periodically for " tune ups. " While he doesn't specialize in chronic illnesses or disabilities, he has been very supportive and has helped me accept how I feel about having a chronic illness as well as survive flare ups, etc. It can be more helpful to find a psychologist who specializes, though, because they understand the disability world and can help you devise techniques to keep on an even keel every day. As for how long you should keep seeing someone? That really depends upon you. If you're no longer in crisis, feel stable emotionally, then it's not that much of a problem to take a hiatus. The biggest thing you need to know is if you can return when you're in a flare up or having current issues to work through. Guest guest
But sometimes you don't have good friends and such to rely on. That is the situation that I found myself in, having become quite a recluse, only spending time helping my daughter and then recuperating to help her again. If you do not have a support system, or they are more of a stressor to you, then this may be helpful to you as it was to me for several years. I have not been for a few years, but my stressors have become manageable with daily talks with the Lord and relying on Him for everything. This too comes with practice and can go hand in hand with a therapist to talk to. Until you get it sorted out, a therapist who is paid to listen to you and help you reflect on helping you sort out your life until you feel you can handle it with the Lord's help may be just what you need. Preferably a Christian based one but anyone who does not put down what you believe will be helpful if they listen. Guest guest
I WENT TO ONE BACK IN OKLAHOMA THAT WAS GROUP THERAPY. I CALLED IT MY CHRONIC PAIN SUPPORT GROUP AS THAT IS WHAT ALL OF US HAD...CHRONIC PAIN. IT WAS THE BEST THING I EVER WENT THROUGH. I HAVE HAD SOME COUNSELING, BUT UNLESS THEY TAKE FMS SERIOUSLY IT CAN BE A WASTE OF TIME. IF YOU GET SOMEONE LIKE THAT, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO ASK FOR SOMEONE ELSE. Guest guest
thank you for responding. The parent who contacted me was told by her pas they did not have any names of psychologists, I thought that was strange. It seems every case is handled differently. When we needed to get a psych done for medicaid Pact sent one here to the house, and we were not billed. I assumed it was part of the governments roll to spend more money frivolous...since Adam's school psych was 'fresh'.So goes the state of il. Guest guest
At Family Benefit Solutions, we have a clinical psychologist who does IQ tests that SSI and PAS agents will accept. There is a standard deviation of 15 points. She is well aware of this and will score as low as ethically possible. She is a young woman who is not intimidating. She performs these tests in our Buffalo Grove office or in your home. ________________________________ From: ELLEN BRONFELD <egskb@...> IPADDUnite Sent: Fri, October 2, 2009 4:59:51 PM Subject: Re: psychologist  Our PAS/ISC agency, CAU gave us the name of a psychologist but we paid out of pocket...she doesn't take Medicaid...she was quite nice....
