CONCERNED HILL ASKS FBI TO PRY OVER SPILT MILK

By BRIAN BLOMQUIST

----

April 11, 2002 -- WASHINGTON - Sen. Hillary Clinton is asking the FBI to

investigate a rash of " bioterrorism " attacks on upstate dairy farms, where

cows and milk tanks have been deliberately contaminated.

No one has been harmed by drinking the contaminated milk, but the saboteurs

have caused the destruction of 50,000 gallons of milk, said State Police Lt.

Hibsch, the lead investigator.

" Tampering with our food supply is an insidious and dangerous form of

terrorism, and those responsible for these attacks need to be held

accountable, " Clinton wrote in a letter to FBI Director Mueller.

The FBI didn't say yesterday whether it will take the case, but an FBI

official acknowledged " it would be a form of bioterrorism " to contaminate

milk tanks.

Cops say there have been 15 cases in Wyoming and Livingston counties in

which milk tanks - or cows themselves - have been contaminated with

antibiotics by dairy-farm intruders.

Hibsch said the milk is routinely tested for antibiotics - which would pose

a risk to someone allergic to penicillin - before it's distributed.

He said there are no suspects in the poisonings, which last occurred two

weeks ago. The antibiotics used are widely available to farmers, he said,

and local animal-rights groups have denied responsibility.
