Hello there,

" A new analysis has found that in the majority of trials conducted by drug

companies in recent decades, sugar pills have done as well as -- or better

than -- antidepressants. " <A

WATCHDOG GROUP PETITIONS FOR CHILDREN'S RIGHTS AGAINST STIGMA AND PSYCHIATRIC

DRUG ABUSE

LOS ANGELES: The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) a 33-year

international watchdog, has called on Congress and state governments to

investigate implementing legal safeguards to prevent children from being

stigmatized as " mentally disordered, " especially through " Special Education, "

or through the use of psychological questionnaires and tests in the

classroom. They want a child’s inalienable right to be educated drug-free

protected. Already, more than 2500 signatures have been collected.

The petition, available on-line at

http://www.petitiononline.com/forkids/petition.html, forms part of CCHR’s

public awareness campaign to reform Special Education, specifically the

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which is up for review.

CCHR says that while Special Education has provision for “learning

disorders,†the focus of the initial law changed from children with real

physical handicaps such as autism, speech impediments, blindness or other

physical disabilities to those with psychiatric “learning disabilities,â€

that cannot be scientifically substantiated.

Within two years of IDEA being passed in 1975, the number of children labeled

with " learning disorders " reached more than 782,000, and soared to 2.6

million in 1996. This is despite . P. Dwyer, assistant executive

director of the National Association of School Psychologists stating that the

way learning disorders are diagnosed is “not a science.â€

CCHR warns that parents are not being given the facts about the lack of

validity or scientific basis for child “mental disorders†or the dangers of

the “treatments†heavily promoted for them, thus violating “informed

consent†standards. In some states, parents have been threatened that if

they do not agree to a psychiatric diagnosis and drug treatment for their

child, they can be charged by Child Protective Services for emotional and

medical neglect.

Bruce Wiseman, the US President of CCHR states, “Millions of children are

being told there is something 'wrong' with their brain, though no one can

prove it. They are labeled 'mentally ill' with diagnoses such as Attention

Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a disorder that exists not because of

science but by a majority vote of American Psychiatric Association Committee

psychiatrists. Children are then subjected to brain-altering drugs in order

to change their behavior. Don’t buy the lie, these are not scientifically

proven disorders, they are used by psychiatrists to rake in insurance

money.â€Â Â

While billions in tax dollars are spent each year to fight the “War on

Drugs,†and children being told that drugs are not a solution their problems,

psychiatrists and their associations continue to pound the public with false

messages about “increasing†mental illness in a desire to push a

pharmaceutical solution for everything from inattentiveness, poor academic

performance, over or under activity levels, to just being a kid. “What

kind

of message are we giving our children?†asks Wiseman, “Can’t study? Take a

drug. Can’t sit still? Take a drug. Feel bad? Take a drug. Let’s face

it,

this isn’t about mental illness, it’s about big business. They are

stigmatizing and drugging children for profit.â€

The U.S. consumes nearly 90% of the one of the top selling stimulants

prescribed children. Since 1997, antidepressants prescriptions have risen 62%

for under 20-year-olds. Antidepressant sales reached $12.5 million in 2000

alone.

Mothers, Mrs. Sheila Mathews and Mrs. Weathers, who have endorsed

the online petition, know the trauma of being faced with coercive psychiatric

tactics. Through the school system, they were both informed that their sons

had “ADHD†and needed drugs. Their outrage over the false information they

eventually uncovered regarding the “disorder†has resulted in a personal

crusade to educate parents about fraudulent diagnoses foisted off on

unsuspecting parents. Mrs. Weather’s son, , suffered dramatically

from psychotropic drug side effects before a proper medical exam discovered

his erratic behavior was caused by severe allergies.

Mrs. Mathews states, " I urge parents and concerned citizens everywhere to log

onto this website and sign this petition. There was nothing mentally wrong

with my child but I was forced to believe this. Know your rights as a parent

and demand accountability for the false information being foisted off on

uninformed parents by the mental health industry.â€

The Citizens Commission on Human Rights was established in 1969 by the Church

of Scientology to investigate and expose psychiatric violations of human

rights. To sign or view the online petition, go to
