HARLINGEN - A seminar to address the diagnosis of mold and other toxins is

scheduled today for physicians and nurses at South Texas Health Care System.

Dr. Stevan Cordas, who is certified in allergy, immunology, internal

medicine and occupational medicine in Hurst, Texas, will give a presentation

on " Mycotoxins Diagnosis & Management. "

Mycotoxins is a substance produced by fungus and other molds.

His presentation will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Doctor's

Conference Room at South Texas Health Care System formally known as South

Texas Hospital on Rangerville Road in Harlingen.

In recent months, mold problems have plagued many Valley schools. Two

campuses in the Brownsville School District remain closed because of mold

contamination.

Parents and staff from both Aikens Elementary and Besterio Middle schools

claim students and faculty are suffering nosebleeds, headaches, seizures,

earaches and other symptoms that they attribute to mold exposure.

The schools have been closed since January after mold concentrations were

found in the building. The mold problem has been reoccurring since 1999 when

it was first discovered.

In November, parents and teachers filed a lawsuit against contractors and

developers of the two schools. The school district was recently added to the

suit.
