Guest guest
I think having rewards in place - even if it is just smiley faces for staying at his desk will help. They may need to be hourly rewards to start with, something he can achieve. Things that were problems for my son in first grade were the lunchroom, recess and latchkey - things where there was a lot of commotion. I think that's typical. A lunch buddy or even an option to eat somewhere else can help with lunch. The school should have a resource room, or counselor's office he can go to when overwhelmed. This should just be until he can get himself together again. Not so that he can go home. My son also had trouble with coloring in first grade, which they did a lot of. Mainly, he had anxiety and didn't know which color was the "right" color to use, so he didn't do anything. Literally telling him what colors to use was the only thing that helped at that time. Also, transitions should be announced well in advance, and if something special comes up - a school assembly, a party, etc, this has to be discussed before hand to alleviate some anxiety.I'm sure I will think of more, but these are off the top of my head right now, hope it helps. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Suzanne suzmarkwood@... My son is starting a new school next week and I am needing to get a list together of tendencies, and meltdowns as well as obsessive behaviors. His old school ignored his 299.0 diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and instead focused on his ADHD and ODD. I have made a list of all of his behaviors and tendencies as well as anxiety...I would love to hear what other parents have issues with their aspie kids as well, for instance, in a meltdown Ashton climbs under desks and hides or he runs out the door and sits in the hall...he also obsesses and focuses on things throughout the day ie his cousin will be going to the same school and he keeps saying that "after school I am going home with Todd" and when I say no that Todd goes to daycare he argues with me and obsesses all day...I would love to know what kind of overstimulation \/sensory issues your child has and how you go about helping in situations like this.. some days I read posts and I think OH MY that is exactly what ashton does...I would love to have a post I can refer to and hear how you deal! So that I can compile a list of the same issues Ashton may have and how you handle them, so that we too can try those things. We are very new to this and still do not know what to do about obsessive behaviors and meltdowns especially at school...His old school would send him to the office and call me to come and get him as they did not know how to get him back to class...Thank you and any help and stories would be sooo much appreciated! Guest guest
Obsessing about the day - I would make him a written schedule so he can refer to it and see what's going on. As for hiding under the table, you would want to know what causes him to get upset in order to figure out how to handle it best.
