My daughter is on Topamax for her weight and her

attention span has increased dramatically. The doctor

was so amazed at how well she is doing on it. My

daughter is 10 years old, limited speech. She has been

going to speech and occupational therapy this summer

and they have noticed how her attention span has

increased. She is doing each at about 20 to 30

minutes. She has been keeping on task in some

projects as well. You might want to ask you doctor

about this one.

but it has made life a whole lot more pleasant. We really haven't seen any side

effects except maybe constipation.

I am fairly new to the group but would really like some help

with the medication area please. My daughter Jayna is 7 years

old. She has been taking Clonidine for the past month and although

it seems to be helping with her verbal tics and some on her hyper

activity it has not helped with her behaviors at all and according

to her psychiatrist this medicine won't help in that area. Has anyone

had success with this drug?? Her therapists are commenting that this

is not helping to keep her focused at all. We have tried Adderall but

that just made the tics worsen and Tenex is just about the same thing

as Clonidine.

I understand that there is a medicine called Risperadol but that comes

with some pretty extensive side effects. Have any of you tried this

and if so what were the results and do you recommend this as a

possibilty for the future??

Appreciate any comments or help with this.

Thanks so much

Dear Elaine,

How much Risperdol is your daughter on currently? We tried this drug

last year when started puberty and started self-abusing herself when

she got upset or frustrated. She did well for about 6 months...also helped

with her concentration and focus in school. However, it started losing its

effectiveness and increasing the dosage was out of the question as she

started acting like a zombie, retreating into dark cornors of our house and

started developing horrible facial tics and she was only on 1.5 mgs. We have

yet to find anything else effective to this date.

Dear ette,

What is the dosage of Topemax you give your daughter? Is it a medication

just to control weight?

Thanks,

,

Medication is not just used for weight control. Her

doctor has found much use of it for attention span and

ticks like flapping waving etc... The dosage I give

her is 25 mg 4 sprinkle capsuls in morning and evening

so comes out to about 100 mg each. She is very

limited on her eating so I have to put it in a

teaspoon of chocolate pudding. Hey what ever works I

always say.

, My daughter is on clonidine. This medicine isn't in the same group as

Adderal. Clonidine helps with my daughter's sleeping. Without the medicine, it

would take Emmy a very long time for fall asleep & she would wake up several

times throughout the night. Her therapists say that her attention & moods seem

to be better & they think this is due to the fact that she is getting a full

night of sleep. Emmy was also on adderal. This is mostly to treat ADD/ADHD.

Adderal made Emmy's moods worse. She would cry more often & be very moody. We

tried adderal because the DR. thought of Emmy could focis better than her moods

would be better also because she would not be as frustrated. We took Emmy off of

the adderal. Hope this makes sense or helps --
