My son has a similar dx, so I understand your difficulty getting the AS dx because of the ODD. My ds absolutely refuses to cooperate, won't answer questions, refuses test taking, refuses to go to appointments, tells every Dr. "don't worry about it", and then remains silent or tells them to shut the f### up.

The ODD is a coping skill used by some AS kids, like ours, it's their way of trying to maintain control. As the pressure to perform the requested or expected tasks becomes too much, they respond with open defiance and refusal to cooperate. This defense mechanism does become very embedded in all areas of behavior over time.

I suggest you get a 2nd opinion for the State recommendation, and try to find one that is a neuropsychologist and has extensive background working with and dx aspergers and has familiarity with ODD. Sometimes the ODD tendency is SO strong that it can actually mask the AS for years, as it did in my son's case... that is one powerful and rewarding way some AS kids find to cope, because it keeps people from getting to close so the AS child is rewarded by being less overwhelmed.

Try not to get too stressed about needing to get Rx so he can finish kindergarten. You can always take him out of kindergarten for an extended "holiday" if need be (is he in kg at age 4??). As far as the SSI, you have time to complete that too. If you feel you need a more experienced examiner, find one and use their recommendation with your application, ignoring the initial one (which sounds more like it was inconclusive). Good Luck to you! My son whom is 4 years old was recently diagosed with Aspergers P.D.D., Severe ADHD and Severe O.D.D. (oppositional defiant disorder). Although he has been showing these behaviors and symptoms since he was just 2 years of age, he was just recently diagnosed after many appointments ad many different doctors. So I was suggested by his home based therapist that i apply for Social Security Disability for my son and so i did. Well Monday we had his mental evaluation with the State Dr and to me things didn't go so good. The dr said that from the 25 minutes we were in there he couldn't specify and aspergers traits, but could definately see the severe ADHD and ODD traits that my son displays. So now what should I do?? I think he does have Aspergers because he does often display signs of it along with the ADHD and ODD. His normal doctor is the one who diagnosed his primary diagnosis as Aspergers syndrome with ADHD and ODD, so I believe her

when she says it ya know. She knows her stuff. Also now that I have applied for ascial security, what do you think the chances of him getting it are? I mean the dr told me if my son didnt get his medicine stablized right now that he would never make it through Kindergarten and I am worried about him. I am planning on trying to get that taken care of tommorow because his dr had yet to put him on a psycho stimulant for his ADHD. I also do not would not want him to get denied because one dr seen him one time and thinks he does not have aspergers because I truly believe he does and I also think his regular dr would know ya know. So I dont know anymore what to do or what to think! If he gets denied the first time should I re apply again until he gets it or what? Thanks for letting me splurge on here and thanks for all who has took time to listen and respond!!Sincerely,Jaiven's

Having fought for SSD for myself years ago, I want to let you know that

the child's treating physicians are supposed to be given MORE weight

than the docs the SSA sends you to. They purposely send you to docs to

discredit diagnoses and also to make you second guess your application.

I'm not kidding here.

You need to pile the SSA with paperwork all about your son and his

difficulties... how it affects his ability to function in daily life.

Use his WORST days to refer to. Get evaluations, tests and send them

in... even after you submit your application you can still send in more

and more! Most people don't realize that. Also, you can attach pages to

the application which gives you NO room to write much of anything.

Often in 'invisible illnesses' require you to go to the hearing level

after being denied twice. It's not uncommon. Could take upwards of a

year. You could also contact an advocate or lawyer who specializes in

disability cases and they get a percentage of the 'backpay.'

Dear Rose,

Thanks so much for your response. Yes it was a child psychiatrist who diagnosed my son with a primary diagnosis of aspergers syndrome, and a.d.h.d. as his secondary and O.d.d. as his third one. So hopefully even though the state dr didn't see any of his symptoms being displayed the day we were in there. It is not constant with him but like 95 % of the time he is displaying his behaviors. We were also only in the room with this dr like 25 minutes max. so I hope that they really look at all the documentation that his home based thereapist and his regular psychiatrist sent in to them. The SSI dr did say that if his medication was not stablized, he would never make it in kindergarten so maybe thats a sign. I dont know what to do anymore. I think I am running out of answers and I am willing to travel the miles to get my son the help he needs, just need to know where to turn to ya know. Anyway, I would love to keep you posted on this matter, and yes I

intend on keeping on filing if he gets denied the first time. your grandson ever show violent behaviors? Like my son is 4 and he is always talking about killing people and guns and things of that nature and it truley scares me. I worry that he is oging to grow up and be a terrible violent person and thats not what i want for him! Anyway thanks for responding and listening to me! I really appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Dear Jaiven's MOM.

I truly empathise with you as my 10 year old grandson has the diagnoses as your child, plus more. My daughter has taken him to many different doctors, and they all gave varying opinions. And they all suggest different meds, none of them have worked over the past 6 years he has been taking them.

I was told by my psychiatrist that because of my depression and anxiety, I could qualify for Social Security but I'd probably have to try 3 times. I thought there was an appeal process or that you could request another evaluation. I suggest that you keep on trying because ASD symptoms are hard to identify if the child is visibly displaying them. Hopefully you have visited reliable medical sites to see the list of symptoms. Was the regular doctor who gave the diagnoses a psychiatrist or neuroligist? Their diagnosis may carry more weight with SS.

Good luck to both of you.

Rosemary

I agree with Jen having had to get SSD for myself with an odd

disability, odd being it didn't " fit into their little subsets " .

The SSD dr they sent me to is there to discredit what your dr's

have sent in, mine had sent in reams of information, and I saw

this SSD dr for a total of 10 minutes!!! I ended up getting a

social security attorney, and appealing with him, and winning it.

I do know they'll deny the SSD as the children haven't " worked "

before they can move one to SSI. If that is denied, I'd get an

attorney and go from there. My friend is going thru this as her

daughter is now 18, and unable to fend for herself.
