Guest guest
Whew, you have your hands full and this sounds OH so familiar to my son at that age. We started meds at 5, but it has been trial and error ever since. Stimulant meds normally perscribed for ADHD usually don't work with Asperger kids. At least that has been our experience and that is what my son's doctor who has been treating AS kids for 30 years says. Anyway, each child is different and you have to go with your gut feeling on this one. Some are totally against medication while I feel it's a tool just like if you needed glasses. Do some research on it and get opinions, then go back on your own instinct. If you think it would improve the quality of your son's life then it is worth trying in my opinion. Good luck! ne From: jojubemom <karlakahler@...>Subject: ( ) newbie Hi Date: Monday, November 29, 2010, 8:41 PM Hi, we are new to the ASD world. Our son is 4 and has a preliminary Dx of Aspergers and possible ADHD. Our behavioral specialist MD didn't want to code Aspergers for insurance reasons, but is certain that is what we're looking at.The biggest challenge we face right now is whether or not to medicate b/c of the extreme hyperactivity and impulse control. We saw our pedi today, she is usually very conservative but she said that if we wanted to do meds, she would have no problems prescribing something. The behavioral MD said the same.We have two older kids with ADHD, both on adderall XR and it does wonders for them so we are not opposed to medication if it is needed. At what age did you/would you medicate for this? He is a sweet boy, not aggressive, but extremely out of control! Last week we went to the grocery store. In the time it took me to put my pin number in the keypad at checkout, he had unbuckled himself and climbed out of the cart and was headed straight towards the auto open doors right into the busy parking lot! This is kind of thing is not unusual for us in the normal course of the day.thoughts? thanks!
Guest guest
We tried stimulant meds and it got worse. Then the doc put him on Intuiv and its helped alot. They also gave us a handicapped parking form to take to DMV, so we have less time in ALL parking lots. What a blessing. We didn't try meds until this year at age 5.
