Hi there,

yes, my son also screams angry words at me/us. We had a psychologist that wanted us to use the "Nutured Heart Approach" which included a "30 second quiet and still" timeout. It was a nightmare. It took around 40 minutes of fighting to get him to actually sit quiet and still for the 30 seconds. I was covered in bruises, bite marks, got head butted, pinched, kicked, hit, hair pulled, you name it. Along with the hateful words...I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kick you in the face, I hate you, etc. It was very emotionally painful for me/us. He would go from this state back to his "normal" state in less than a second and vice versa. One time both me and husband were taking turns with a timeout and he shouted "You f----ing idiots" for about 10 minutes straight. We were both in shock as we had never heard him say the F word before. Needless to say after a couiple of weeks we gave up the approach and started the meds. He sees a new psychologist

starting this Wednesday. He is six years old. The trigger for his outbursts seem to be asking him to do anything he does not want to do....get dressed (in anything but his favorite clothes), brush teeth, go to school, eat anything besides meat or snack chips, etc etc.Patty Mom to Blaise

my son would have major meltdowns ...I just would tell him in a quiet voice..almost a whisper...Please go to your room...and when you can be "human" again...you can come out. I didn't tell him he had to be quiet or anything...(just make sure it is safe in there...that he won't hurt himself). My son would talk to himself....cry...hit his pillow and/or bed. But I let him be...once he worked it out ...he came out a whole new person. Amazing.

Try positive reinforcement not negative. Reward him for his good behaviors ...and bad behaviors ...just send him to his room. Ignore the yelling and screaming, cursing, etc. After a while I think he will realize he is not getting the reactions he wants. And, always use a quiet voice...almost a whisper. It is amazing. It can be so hard to do and I don't always do it myself...(dumb me)...but with my son ...it seemed to work.

As far as getting dressed...let him wear his favorite outfit...but 2 or 3 or 5 of the same thing. My son when he finds a pair of pants he likes and they don't bother him (sensory issues)...I buy 5 of them....people probably think ...omg...he is wearing the same outfit and it must smell...but little do they know...I have 5 of the same outfit. To me...it is one less battle ..

Brushing teeth...does he not like the flavor of the toothpaste? Does brushing bother him. Have you let him go with you to pick out the brush he likes or the flavor of the toothpaste. My son will only use Colgate Total...he would even ask the dentist to use it (LOL). What about an electric one...or a Sonic toothbrush. My son loves his sonic one.

Another thing...work on one issue at a time...solve that and go on to the next. And remember, we are here for you and have all gone thru this at one point or another....hee hee. And don't forget to look back and get a chuckle out of life.
