Guest guest
My little guy, , was found to have AML upon having blood work prior to his open heart surgery at 5 months old. He was born with Transient Myloproliferitave Syndrome, which is a blood disorder that they say "mimics leukemia". It cleared up shortly after his birth, but, they continued to watch his counts. He had almost 80 blood and platelet transfusions before he was 4 months old. He had neutropenia just about all the time before he was ever diagnosed with AML. Pray for zero % blasts!! As for the question about your friend's daughter's bloodwork, I know of one little girl who was diagnosed with AML after a routine annual screening at her well child check. But I also know of several children with DS who are neutropenic with no known cause (and kids with DS are at increased risk for neutropenia). I've never heard that neutropenia is an indicator of future AML and I really hope for your friend's sake that this is just a blip and her daughter's WBC will be normal in two weeks. Shortly after I wrote it, we were on our way for an unexpected trip to the hospital for blood in the stools. We were in for 6 days, but all is well and we are back home. You have all been very helpful and I thank you. Tomorrow we get our day 29 results back and I'm praying for 0% blasts. The reason I'm posting today is my dear friend (who posted for me the week of 's diagnosis) has a question about her daughter Ella. Ella has DS and is 's age and best bud. She went in for her annual bloodwork and the results showed she was neutropenia. Her WBC count was 1500. She is very concerned. The doctor said she should come back in two weeks for another bloodwork. From what she read , the results could be a preleukemia indicator for AML. Did any of your children with AML discover your child had leukemia through their regular bloodwork check-up? Does she have reason to be concerned about the results? has ALL and his WBC was high so I'm not sure what a low WBC would indicate. She has not been sick recently. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Jo Make every e-mail and IM count. Join the i知 Initiative from Microsoft. Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Guest guest
Well…. First thing is that she stop reading. There is way too much information on the internet that freaks people out. WBC go up and down for many different reasons. Just because it is low now, doesn’t mean that it will be low in 2 weeks. Tell her not to worry. When was diagnosed his platelets were critically low, his hemoglobin was low but his white count wasn’t that low. Keep us posted. Guest guest
When Chelsea was diagnosed w/ AML her WBC was very low too.  She also had blasts show up in her blood, and from that our dr. knew immediately.  I'm surprised her dr. is making her wait two more weeks.  Tell her if her daughter has ANY fevers to take her in immediately.  Another thing we noticed the day before diagnosis was petechia.  Were her platelets and hemoglobin okay? Guest guest
A low WBC count can be caused by a viral infection, but you said Ella hasn't been sick. If it is viral, though, it does make sense to wait to repeat the blood work. first had petechiae. After reading about other kids with leukemia on the listserv, I requested a CBC and sure enough....platelets were low. CBC was repeated and again...low platelets. They wanted to repeat a 3rd time, but I requested to be referred to a pediatric oncologist. So routine blood work was the first step in diagnosing .'s bone marrow biopsy showed high levels of blasts which put her in a category of Meylodysplatic syndrome (MDS). We monitored her blood monthly and when the # of blasts increased, they repeated the bone marrow biopsy. At that time the # of blasts elevated to a point that she now she was diagnosed with full blow AML. MDS is kind of a precursor to AML. So if Ella's counts are still down in 2 weeks, I personally would get a referral to a pediatric oncologist, but that is just me.spJim & Jo Baar <jbaar@...> wrote: Hi Everyone I want to first thank everyone for responding so quickly to my last e-mail about my son .
