Guest guest
I think I have written to this group before, but mostly I read and learn. My 12 year old has a 27 degree curve in thoracic and today the orthopedic says she has Scheuermann's kyphosis. He did say based on her hip xrays that she is pretty much done growing(puberty at 10)she is just 5'2 " (short in my family, but so is my other daughter) He recommend some basic core exercises basically to improve her posture. Said again bracing was unnecessary... ly I am a little uncomfortable with this.. 12 seems early to be done growing. Also, now with two issues and no intervention, plus she has a muscular disorder that causes her to have really low tone... I do not think he is even considering the cosmetic part of this-it is upsetting to her...She does have pain as well that he won't acknowledge is from the spine... great guy but after reading all that you guys have shared I really wonder. We hope to be moved to Houston in June, that is just a couple months away-I do have a list I pulled up(from what you guys again have shared)of scoliosis specialists in Houston. Maybe time for a second opinion? Thanks Diane N ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Guest guest
Dear Diane, DEFINITELY get a second opinion from a top notched scoli specialist. There is one in Plano? Tx, can't think of his name off hand but old timers here can fill in the blank. Anyone? Jolene **************It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money & Finance. Guest guest
Diane, I was diagnosed when I was in 5th grade. I don't know the degrees of my curve, but I know it was mild. It didn't cause any pain back then. They didn't do any bracing or anything other than monitoring it. I stopped seeing a specialist when I was 14. (I don't know why I stopped. It was my mother's decision.) I had a two inch growth spurt at 16. I don't know if that changed anything, but in college the pain slowly started. Nothing bad. Now I am 31 and having more pain, and am finally getting things checked out. I guess what I am saying, is that 12 if pretty young to say she won't grow. I would get a second opinion and keep monitoring her. I wish my mother had done that for me. > > > > I think I have written to this group before, but mostly I read and learn. > > My 12 year old has a 27 degree curve in thoracic and today the orthopedic says she has Scheuermann's kyphosis. > > He did say based on her hip xrays that she is pretty much done growing(puberty at 10)she is just 5'2 " (short in my family, but so is my other daughter) > > He recommend some basic core exercises basically to improve her posture. Guest guest
Thanks - This guy is the Director at Childrens. But I think he only sees things from a mechanical standpoint-I am more worried about pain and cosmetics-I think perhaps someone in private practice might understand our concerns more.. I thought it was odd that he could say she was done as well. I was 5'7 " at 11,(two years after the onset of puberty)but grew another 2 inches by the time I was 16. I have horrible chronic back issues that have really changed my life. I would like do to everything to prevent this type of pain in my daughter. Definitely time for a second opinion. Thanks again Diane Re: my 12 year old Diane, I was diagnosed when I was in 5th grade. I don't know the degrees of my curve, but I know it was mild. It didn't cause any pain back then. Guest guest
Hi I am new to the group and have a 12 year old son named who has Aspergers. He has some violent outbursts against me when he is corrected and we use a combination of Tenex and Abilify to control his outbursts. I am looking for any other parents that may have these difficulties and what works for your child to control the outbursts a little better. IF anything and I am looking to make some friends I am a single mom and don't get out much except to church. Marcia
