Guest guest
Good luck to your son at camp! Hope he enjoys! Mine (11) goes to a mainstream camp ( past 2 summers) & really enjoys it. It's a warm and fuzzy place tho, where it's a little more $$ but he gets the right kind of counselors, helpful directors and a nice mix of kids. I really like the definition of AS below...exept for the empathy. I feel like it's more a perspective issue than empathy. anyway... http://www.aspergersyndrome.org/Articles/What-is-Asperger-Syndrome-.aspx > > does anyone have or know where to find a cheat sheet of typical aspie behaviors that I can give to camp counselors? > > DS starting at a new mainstream day camp and would like to educate counselors as best as I can. > > Thanks, > > > >
Guest guest
NO cheat sheet but a few tips from a Camp Dad and camp board member. Ask the Director whether any of the staff are pursuing degrees in special ed (many of the senior counselors are bachelors candidates and some of the unit directors are often pursing their masters). With that said, here is a general (but in no way a complete) guide for those working with kids on the spectrum: The spectrum is classically associated the “Autistic Triad” of social awkwardness, sensitivity to external stimuli and preservation on topics of specialized interests. Some, but not all suffer from “mind blindness” or are unable to naturally see things from another ‘s point of view. Mention any sensory issue your child has either in terms of things that set the child off or that the child seeks as part of a sensory diet. Remember that spectrum kids are like all kids, only more so. Good luck, I hope your child enjoys and gets as much out of camp as do our kids. Very truly yours; Todd B. Guest guest
What might be helpful is writing a letter describing your son, his likes/dislikes, things that scare him or make him anxious and strategies you have found helpful.
