She is conducting a research study to determine appropriate screening measures to identify and assess features of autism spectrum disorders in adults. She is looking for adults who may want to participate in her study. The study consists of six questionnaires to be completed by a parent and/or a support professional of an individual with intellectual disability and/or an autism spectrum disorder, covering a broad range of behaviors and demographic information. The Ohio State University Institutional Review Board has approved this research. The attached letter and flier explain everything. She asked if I would share this information with anyone that could perhaps generate some subjects. Please disseminate this information to any contacts or list serves you feel appropriate. Phone: 614-466-7317 FAX: 614-728-7072 Program Directors, I am a clinical psychology graduate student at The Ohio State University, specializing in autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disability. For my master's thesis, I am conducting a study investigating the usefulness of screening measure, the Social Communication Questionnaire, to identify autism spectrum disorders in adults. Dr. Betsey Benson, my advisor, is supervising this study. Community awareness of the increasing rates of autism spectrum disorders among children has grown considerably over the past few years, but much less is known about the prevalence of this disorder in adults. Thus, appropriate screening measures to identify and assess features of autism spectrum disorders in adults are needed. My project is an attempt to fill this gap and meet the needs of this population by investigating one promising instrument that may efficiently and accurately identify adults in need of further assessment and treatment for autism spectrum disorders. We are seeking your assistance in recruiting participants for this study. The study consists of six questionnaires to be completed by a parent and/or a support professional of an individual with intellectual disability and/or an autism spectrum disorder, covering a broad range of behaviors and demographic information. The questionnaires should require about 45 minutes to one hour of the rater's time. The Ohio State University Institutional Review Board has approved this research. If you have any questions or would like results of the study once it is complete, please feel free to contact either researcher. For additional questions or concerns, please contact the Office of Responsible Research Practices (ORRP) at 614-688-8457, located at 300 Research Foundation Building, 1960 Kenny Road, Columbus, OH, 43210-1063. Guest guest
RESEARCH STUDY Seeking: Parent or primary caregiver must be above the age of 18 years old and have a child between the ages of eight to eleven years of age who was diagnosed by a psychologist or medical doctor as having Autism Spectrum Disorder. OR Parent must be above the age of 18 years old and have a child between the ages of eight – eleven years old who does not have any disabilities as classified by IDEA (2004). It includes autism, Deaf-blindness, deafness, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, mental retardation, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairments, specific learning disability, speech or language impairment, traumatic brain injury, and a visual impairment, including blindness. Study: The purpose of this study is to gain a greater understanding of temperament- based parental approach to addressing the needs of each child. The research is comprised of three different phases in which parents will be asked to complete several surveys. Parents will be matched according to set criteria established for the research study. They will then be assigned to two groups. Some parents will be asked to implement specific parental strategies to address the needs of their child. This can take place in their home and community environment. The research will last approximately two months. Reward: Once results have been obtained, a thank you letter will be mailed to all the parents as well as $5.00 gift card to and Noble as an appreciation for participation in the study! Interested in Learning More: If you are interested in learning more about this research study, please contact the Principal Investigator, Tara Malka, M.A., Ed.M. at tdm33@...! Well this questionnaire was barely a questionnaire. It asked about cancer in the family, reflux and smoking and drinking history. This research is probably looking into the risks and causes of cancer in achalasia. It may also be looking for some markers in the blood and tissue for possible causes of achalasia, but it may just be about cancer. If it is about more than just the risk and rates of cancer then I would guess that they have a theory that they are trying to research or they are trying to test, confirm or improve some findings of other research. Studies like these can be very focused, which can be a good thing. It allows for some control and easier comparison between studies than may be the case with broader studies. One of the important features of a lot of research is the identification and control of variables. If for example, you were trying to study the affect of humidity on the expansion of a certain substance you should probably control temperature and time, which would also mean you identified temperature and time as a possible variables in the expansion of that substance. In your research there could be some cases where temperature was not controlled well and the data from those cases needed to be excluded. In this example research there is only one variable that is being studied and two others that are being controlled. If you had a study with ten food items you were studying the effects of you should identify all the relevant variables for each item and there could be a number of them for each item. It is one thing to have corn on your plate, but even if you don't like it or eat it you still have corn in many food products and it was fed to much of the livestock that meat comes from. Fish is also like that. Fish meal is used in many ways and people that don't eat fish still end up eating fish products. Some people that have Ciguatera Fish Poisoning may become sensitive to other foods that would seem unrelated. I use sardine paste, like a seasoning, in things many people would never expect it in. Broad surveys and questionnaires can be useful but they don't take the place of more focused research techniques. Which techniques researchers use are going to depend on the exact questions the researchers are trying to answer and their backgrounds. There is a skill to doing a good design for a questionnaire like you want. Some researchers have their skills in other types of research. There may only be enough funding for just so much research and it will be spent on the research that those involved think is the best use of the money. If anyone has a child that is going to do a science fair project they should understand the concept of identifying and controlling variables. Science fairs have a lot in common with beauty pageants. It is about pleasing the judges, who often have some science background. A very simple project with good identification and control of variables will look much more beautiful to the judges than a more complex one with uncertainties. Professional research is also judged (in different ways) and scientists tend to like simplicity. notan
