Mold forces FAA to exit BR offices

By Advocate staff report 3/22/02

The Baton Rouge office of the Federal Aviation Administration has moved

out of its Metro Airport headquarters because of mold in the 15-year-old

building.

Airport spokesman Bill Profita said Thursday an FAA-commissioned study

found four types of mold, including one toxic variety, and moved out

Monday once the test results showed that the mold could be harmful. The

airport is also analyzing the building's mold to determine how to clean

it up and should know results within a week, Profita said.

The FAA office has temporarily moved into a building on Corporate

Boulevard, he said.

Profita said the airport, which owns the former FAA building, built the

facility for the government agency, but added that the local office

performs mostly administrative functions and doesn't have to be on

airport property. The FAA's lease on the building, which was about

$50,000 a year, ended in 2001, Profita said.
