Veterinarians in Kentucky on high alert

February 27, 2002

DVM Newsmagazine

Lexington-

Veterinarians and breeders would rather err on the side of caution as the

foaling season nears in Kentucky, after 20 percent of mares in the region

lost their foals last year.

Both parties are focused on any unusual patterns of weather this year as

well as measures to control the caterpillar population.

A state report shows that the thoroughbred industry lost 516 foals and 2,998

aborted fetuses last spring.

Researchers plan to begin an extensive environmental monitoring system that

would provide advanced warning, should a new epidemic occur.
