Guest guest
Hello all. I'm relatively new to the group, so please let me give some background...because I really don't know what my next move should be. My daughter is 4 1/2. Back in Nov 2008, she was evaluated by FDLRS and then referred to my local school district. While they felt she was " somewhere " in the autism spectrum, they were not willing to give me a definitive diagnosis before she turned 6. Recently, with a new pediatrician I tried to explain some of the issues...and how I also agree with a diagnosis of autism for my daughter. Well, the pediatrician brushed me off - saying she didn't want to " label " my daughter - and gave me a referral to the local behavioral center for an evaluation. After 3 months of questions for me - first paperwork, then an interview, my daughter had her appointment with the doctor. He proceeded to ask me the same questions from my previous interview, and never interacted with my child. The appointment concluded with him offering me several medications to " control " my child's behavior. No offer of special classes or therapy...and NO diagnosis. I asked " how can you prescribe medication for a child that you are not willing to give a diagnosis to? " His reply? He was just another doctor who didn't want to " label " her. What am I to do? I'm not looking to control my child with medication...especially when there's no official diagnosis. Granted, there may be a place for medication, but not until there is a diagnosis. I want to do everything I can for her. My health insurance limits where I can take her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. ~Tina
