Guest guest
Dear Tracey, I've had good luck getting my four-and-a-half-year-old, Grace to take her MTX pills by imbedding them in some kind of foodstuff -- something you might swallow whole. I started out by cutting a miniature marshmallow in half and sticking the pill in the middle so it didn't show. Then one week I ran out of marshmallows so I did the same with a bit of soft bread. Then, last week I had neither on a Friday night so I got a spoon of ice cream and imbedded each pill in a small spoonful and she loved it. She knows she's taking a pill but it seems more like an adventure than a chore. However, I don't know how well this would go over with older children... N. Guest guest
I had a little trick when my daughter le was little and needed to learn to take pills. She hated the liquid. I would buy " nerds " the candy, and let her try to swallow them. The point of it was if she wasn't successful, they still tasted good. She practiced that way one weekend and had the swallowing down pat. She was about 3 at the time. Takes them by the handful now at age 13. Those pills have such a bitter/yucky after-taste. Guest guest
Deborah, I can swallow a pill as long as it is no bigger then an M & M. But it varies for each individual according to how tight you are. I started out crushing my bigger pills but I just couldn't stand it so I bought a pill splitter. Guest guest
My son is a bit younger (turned 2 in April). We have him swallow pills on a teaspoon with organic baby food (bananas work best). I just showed my niece who is 8 how he swallows pills - she was amazed since she can't swallow any yet! > > > > > > Debra, > > > > > > To get my son to take his nedicines/supplemen ts we played hardball! I told him at age 4, that either he would get one chance to take it or I would give it to him. Well, unflavored nystatin tastes really awful, even with sweeteer, so he chose not to swallow it. I then made him lay back, held his mouth and made sure he swallowed. Drastic, but necessary. He did it every day after that. Never had to do it again. > > > > > > I am one of those moms who is very sensitive to my kids, always doing things for them, generally spoiling them - but I won't budge on meds. They are too important! Now he takes more awful suuplements, but in a spoonful of jam - he tolerates them. > > > > > > Juice just doesn't disguise enough sometimes. Guest guest
has a swallow delay and due to autism, oral sensory issues. How I was able to get him to take pills- is to use the automatic reflex. Put pill(s) in mouth and take med syringe full of water and squirt on the tongue. automatic reflex causes med and water to slide down throat. mom to 7 years old in CT ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of sassykay59@...
