Hi Kim,

I had not realized I wrote a " joint effort " that is cute. improved a

little bit,but then stoped. He is having a really hard time, but at least its

not constant,he does have moments when he feals good. They just dont last

long enough. He has a whole lot of swelling for the ortho to inject this

time,so hopefully by doing the entire ankle he will do much better with his

pred taper this time. This will be our third time to get below 7.5mg pred. You

know the old saying, third times the charm.

I know the looks from carrying a big child, dont let it bother you.You do

what you got to do.Hope Logan does well at school.I had a one on one

conferance with s teacher that turned into an IEP meeting this

morning,so I dont have to schedule one,all is taken care of.

Hugs to you guys

Dear Becki,

You're right on these kids being " singled " out for things. Kate's in 2nd

grade now and she too has had her exceptions. I think the kids handle it

better than anyone--and if things are treated more " matter of factly "

and adults don't make a huge fuss--then the other kids are more willing

to accept things. Right now our big " issue " is the attendance contest

in school--between grades, classrooms and individuals. There is NO way

Kate's room will ever have perfect attendance with her in it--and she'll

never have perfect attendance. I know the school does this to keep kids

in school (with party, treats, special activities and prize drawings)

but it's so unfair for our kids. Kate's home today as she woke up and

threw up all morning. (hoping it's not this West Nile Virus--as we live

in farm and horse area) She's just now one week into school and already

absent. Last year she did pretty good and only missed 12 days for

illness. This year I'll make it my " mission " to do something about

making the contest more fair. Anyway--sorry to ramble--but just wanted

to let you know that unfortunately there are many battles to be

fought--and you're doing very good as far as I can tell! :)

Hi ,

hopefully this year of pre school will be a good learning experiance for us

so next year in Kindergarten we will know more of what to expect. That is

crazy about the perfect attendance, only a small handfull make it through a

year without missing any days and the ones that do usually came to school

many times when they should have been home.Dont let it bother you.Sorry to

hear Kate is sick already,we have had 2 cases of human exposure to West Nile

Virus here in Tennessee. It doesnt really scare me when it comes to me and my

hubby,Shelby worries me some because she is only 6,but with and the

JRA and meds that is scarey.Praying that it is just a tummy virus and

nothing more.Hugs!

Hey Becki,

Don't worry too much about and school. My daughter

(MK) is one of everyone's favorite at her school. She is 10

and will be going into the 5th grade. Everyone is soooo helpful to

her. They don't tease or single her out. MK comes home and tells me

how she has " human " crutches. Her friends let her lean on them for

support. They help her up when she can't get up. She even told me

that she hopes one little boy is in her class - he carries her books

for her. I got her a strolling bookbag - hopefully she will use it.

I think things will be fine for . One thing about MK is she

wants to do for herself, she is just a go getter and doesn't let the

disease get her down.

I will be dealing with the school this year about a 504 plan for MK.

This should be interesting. I've had to deal with the school system

for my son (age 12 adhd) and boy has it been a fight. Hopefully

things will be better this year.

Good luck with everything.

the attendance was a issue with s case we tried the if she couldnt make it to school in the morning she could get there by 11 she would be counted present well it worked some but it failed later as she got worse thats why the principal said due to past history the homebound schooling was best for she missed 40 or more days a year if you think about it the ones who have a cold or a virus if the parents kept their kids at home the others wouldnt get sick if this year yall cant make the goal remember the next year will be there i even tried taking to school even when she was sick and picking her up at lunch time at least she would be counted if you know shes going to be absent talk with the teacher and principal about her case and if shes to sick for school maybe that day go get her work from the teacher and if she does the work and hands it in they could count her as present i know with in the homebound program they cant put her on absent list even though she doesnt go into the school she got perfect attendance last year the first time in years ask about this since its a concern at this age useing good hygeine with these kids will learn them about germs and how they get around Robbin

Dear Robbin,

I agree 100% with the fact that the schools push so hard on attendance

that you get sick kids going who are making everyone else sick! I talked

to Kate's teacher and let her know how upset Kate gets when she has to

miss--and the plan we're going to try is not to include her attendance

with the class total and instead of her getting a " prize " for 9 weeks

straight attendance--the school will modify it for her so she only needs

4 weeks (a much more attainable goal--I hope) The school said we can

try this and if it doesn't work then try maybe counting homework papers,

etc... At least they're trying and Kate feels better knowing that she's

not going to be the " downfall " of the 2nd grade attendance contest!

She's feeling better and back in school--must have been a stomach bug. I

was worried because a few horses and birds around here have tested

positive for that West Nile Virus. Thank God it wasn't that! I hope

has a good year this time. How old is she again? I was thinking

she was 16 or 17--but my minds going! (going where I don't know! lol!

birthday is October 3 ! ) :)

is 15 years old lolol and 10th grade if your child does good in attendance by breaking that down she also needs something as a prize right now that west nile has been found up in a area called Buckhead and 4 men have got it now who only work in that area not living there

s doctor said today that to keep in the house during the dawn and at dusk this is the worst times to get bit shes excited about this school year even if its homebound shes into the 4 by 4 which gives her 18 credits per year instead of 14 credits this will make it better for her to graduate earlier also

keep up the great job your doing

Hi and Robbin,

That bothers me a lot too .... when there are kids who are obviously and visibly ill, sneezing and coughing and spreading germs all over the place, who continue to attend school! Last year, Josh came home several days in a row telling me that a boy in two of his classes who sits next to him was really sick but wasn't allowed to stay home. His parents made him go to school, even though his nose was runny and he couldn't hardly stop coughing. Around the third day, Josh took it upon himself to ask his teacher if he could change his seat because he was worried he might catch it, too. He moved, temporarily, to the other side of the classroom but it was already too late. Josh got sick. As usual, it took him a lot longer to get over the cough and cold than the other boy. Plus, it seemed to cause a flare up of his arthritis symptoms. He had to miss school. I do realize how hard it can be to make arrangements for a child to have proper supervision at home on a school day, especially in single parent households or when both parents work full-time, but it's really not fair to others. Especially children who have compromised immune systems.

I think it's also a great idea, how you and Kate's teacher have modified the attendance goal. Josh has never yet been able to get a perfect attendance award at school. This year we've agreed to have a financial motivator. If he has a full quarter without missing school he will get a bonus. $25. I'm very curious to see how this will work out. Only time will tell .....

Take Care,

Georgina

Good plan Irma. I'm convinced the only reason Maddie adapted to Melmark was

because of how we *inched* her into the program. It's so easy for our kids

to be overloaded and a new school, along with all the other stuff (new

transportation, new kids, new surroundings) can be too much.

I'm glad to hear is doing well. Keep us posted.

Miss Maddie is home til the 2nd. This summer has been crazy

busy....personally I can't WAIT til September!!!!!! ;-)

Hi a & all,

Hope all went well on the boys return to school and this goes for

anyone else's kids. Keeping my fingers crossed that continues

adapting to his new transition at High School which was this past

Monday. A-okay on his 4th day.

Monday morning was a drama for me and of course I probably over-

reacted had too many flashbacks of his elementary years as I thought

everyone just seemed clueless not having any autism training or just

not knowing how to handle kids with challenging behavior. I know it

was the first day and they probably thought I just baby him too much

until they saw what I meant when I had to chase him around the

parking lot area. One mistake I made was probably not prepare him

with a visual strategy. Maybe this would of helped. By noon when I

went for pick-up he seemed content.

I'm providing his transportation at this time. Transportation has

been a mess and I've always believe that should ride the

school bus for him to feel independent but I enjoy taking our time.

So, I'm in no hurry to contact the transportation to stress myself

out with this arena.

Hope I do not jinx writing all this and he has been sleeping early

the past 4 nights compared to the never sleeping. Its always been

hard for to transition from one thing to another and so far

its been good.

Toilet routine he is still progressing well and at school. Still not

100% but still doing great.

He is initating on his own at school to join his fellow classmates

and this is awesome news. His teacher said that he is participating

with the exercise session to the .

Ok, I was being too sensitive and I was already preparing to call

for ARD meeting but since many of my fellow friends with the same

educational professional field whom Bless their hearts devoted their

precious time with their suggestions and advice for me to hold on

and for me to be nice, to hang in there and see how his first week

would turn out and just plan conference time with his teacher to

address my concerns and then apply them to a future ARD meeting and

they would also attend to them if I needed them.

I did panic but now its nice to know that I do have back-up and his

teacher has been great so far.

I wish everyone the best when your kids start school.

Hugs to all.

Hi Lynn,

I am not sure if the law applys to private schools but it sounds like they are in violation of the Americans with dissabilities act.Preschools have to follow it and they aren't run by the government.I don't know who you need to contact but most lawyers give free consults and if they are in violation it would probably take just one letter to the school to change their attitude.

I also know that if we feel like isn't receiving the proper assistance from the school that we can file for a hearing and if it proved that our school wasn't doing their job the city has to pay for private school.

Good luck

Hi Lynn,

You may find it helpful to reference the Department of Education's

website. I am attaching the policy that would apply to your case.

104.39 Private education.

(a) A recipient that provides private elementary or secondary

education may not, on the basis of handicap, exclude a qualified

handicapped person if the person can, with minor adjustments, be

provided an appropriate education, as defined in 104.33(B)(1), within

that recipients program or activity.

(B) A recipient to which this section applies may not charge more for

the provision of an appropriate education to handicapped persons than

to nonhandicapped persons except to the extent that any additional

charge is justified by a substantial increase in cost to the

recipient.

© A recipient to which this section applies that provides special

education shall do so in accordance with the provisions of 104.35 and

104.36. Each recipient to which this section applies is subject to

the provisions of 104.34, 104.37, and 104.38.

On a personal note, you may want to re-evaluate sending your child to

a school who is reluctant to meet her needs, even if the law allows

you to send her there. Good Luck

Unfortunately, most private schools are not equipped to handle a child that

needs even the slightest modifications. Therefore, as listed in their hand

books(usually) they tell you up front that they will not accept a child with

any disabilities. However, if it is not listed then you may have a chance to

appeall their decesion. I was also faced with this problem, and it was

listed in their handbook. I chose to relocate my son to public school and it

proved, for me, to be a wonderful move. Not only was he able to receive OT

and PT at school ( which he would not at private) they by LAW have to

modifiy on days he does not feel 100%. Good luck .

Hi, Lynn. My kids go to private school and they have never said anything

of the sort. Now, we do not have an IP plan or 504 that so many here

talk about. does not need a wheelchair either so that never came

up. We spoke with his teachers in grammar school when he was first

diagnosed and he had permission to rest if he needed it, or whatever he

needed. Gym was as he felt able to participate. For high school, I

simply filled out the medical form and his counselor was aware. When he

had in for his first " visit " (the counselor meets with all of his

students at the beginning) he told there were a few other of his

students with JRA and that if he needed anything to let him know. There

has never been any problems with taking him out for dr visits or

whatever. Now, he did not receive his PT at school when he was going,

but I do know that the private grammar school my kids went to did bus

kids over to the public school when special services were needed. Then

the kids were brought back to school. Find out exactly why the school

will not accept her. Does she need a wheelchair and they are not

handicapped accesible? Many older schools are allowed to get around the

law for a period of time because they are " grandfathered " in. Our school

was and just recently installed a lift. Perhaps they think you are

expecting PT or OT and they cannot provide it there? They should have

some sort of arrangement with the local public school district. I would

explore a bit more why they are saying this and educate them on JRA.

Good luck and let us know, Michele (16,pauic & spondy)

Lynn,

How frustrating!!! How did the school know she has JRA? Do they

understand it is not contagious? I am appalled at a school

rejecting kids. Does that mean there are no ADHD kids attending?

I don't know the rules, other than to call the local paper and ask

them to do a piece on your story. My kids all go to a private

school and they bend over backwards to accomodate my 7 year old son

with systemic.

Someone else mentioned that you might question your decision to send

your kids there at all if they have such an unworldly and

uncooperative attitude. I tend to agree with that comment (but I'm

just emotionally venting for you). Maybe it's just one bad

uneducated apple that makes the whole school look bad. If you feel

strongly about the school, I'm sure you'll find the support you need

to send your kids there. Good luck.

Hi Charlotte,

I don't know what the complaints procedure is over there, but what ever it

is I think you should follow it.

[Here you would need to write to the head teacher initially (principal for

you), and probably follow that up with a letter to the board of governors].

There is absolutely no excuse for humiliating a child like that and the

person should be disciplined. If you make a formal complaint about them,

does it get recorded on their employment record?

About the assignment, I would write a letter detailing why cannot do

it, because of his impairments (it helps if you can use some psychological

language) and request that he is given work which is appropriately

differentiated to take account of his disability. I'm sure he could do

something which just involved factual things, not 'imaginary'.

He managed to stumble through the story but it's all messed up. I had to laugh when I read it (after he went to bed) because it was hysterical if you understand his thought pattern. It was a detailed account of one of his "regular days" involving every pet in the house AND the neighbors but had very little about being an African American!!! I will be discussing this with his teacher today.

Re: School

Hi Charlotte,I don't know what the complaints procedure is over there, but what ever it is I think you should follow it.[Here you would need to write to the head teacher initially (principal for you), and probably follow that up with a letter to the board of governors].There is absolutely no excuse for humiliating a child like that and the person should be disciplined. If you make a formal complaint about them, does it get recorded on their employment record?About the assignment, I would write a letter detailing why cannot do it, because of his impairments (it helps if you can use some psychological language) and request that he is given work which is appropriately differentiated to take account of his disability. I'm sure he could do something which just involved factual things, not 'imaginary'. in England

I think the teacher making him drink that -- I'd report that. That's so mean! I'm so not the quiet parent lol (Could this be one reason I homeschool? LOL) I do want in a preschool services program for now, but things like this make me wonder how I'll be able to deal.

School

I am getting so frustrated with this school.

2 weeks ago they had the kids watch a video of the MLK assignation and mob riots and lynching as part of a "civil rights" lesson. I am all for "teaching" about the civil rights movement but...come on...do the kids REALLY need a visual??? at age 10?? My son has an anxiety disorder that is well documented at the school and I did not get so much as a note home warning me that they were going to do this. was stimming and barking at everyone all night until I found out what happened at school!! The video also included dogs mauling people (btw, one of his obsessions is animals) this was a disaster!!

This past Friday... had a plastic cup full of apple peels that he'd spit out along with the core. He poured some of his water into the cup and said "look apple juice". The teachers aid yelled at him and made him drink it right in front of the class....WHY??? My kid stands out enough on his own...do I really need the teachers making a spectacle of him???

Today, he comes home with a project that he's had 2 days to finish in class that he's having an incredibly difficult time with. Turns out he has to write a story about what it would be like to wake up one day and discover your an African American in 1955.......AHHHH!! Nightmare project for a kid with AS!!! I had to step by step go through how he had to leave logic behind to do this....he was SO confused....example....."mom, I can't even be me if I do this because in 1955 Nana was only 5 so you were not even born so logically, I was not even born".....HELP!!!!

I told the teacher today that with all the stuff that I have to go through with the school, I am getting really SICK of having to go over STUPID common sense stuff with them....come on now!! I lovingly refer to myself as psycho-mom when it comes to the school here.....I am sure they feel that this title fits me too :) although I'm not sure there is much "loving" behind it lol!
