Suggestions for meeting with Voc Rehab

DS and I have a first meeting with Voc Rehab tomorrow and I am looking for

suggestions on what to ask them, what they can do, etc.

I would like DS to get certified to drive forklift. We have just given up on the

Culinary positions and now are looking at working in a warehouse, since that is

what he did before Job Corps.

Any suggestions on how to deal with Voc Rehab much appreiciated.

Great question!! We had a meeting with them that seemed to go great.

My ds's IEP team was there as well. We applied and then...nothing.

Haven't heard from them since. It's been since last May. I don't know

what their timeline is like.

I would just ask them what they can do to help your ds get and keep a

job. Let them know what has happened in the past. I mean, this is

exactly what they are supposed to be doing! Helping the people get

jobs and keep them. We had discussed having them work with my ds to

attend college and then later, they would come in and help him get a

job/keep a job. We also talked about driving and how he needed help

with that. But since then, he has taken a big interest in learning to

drive and that is going ok, actually. So we won't need their help

there after all. But they were capable of dealing with that as well, I

was told. It may vary by state as to what they focus on. But the lady

who met with us went through her brochure and discussed what they could

do to help before discussing what he would need help with.

Let us know how it goes!!!

Well, it turned out there was little to ask them. This meeting was all about

filling out forms and more forms and then a couple more. They then contact his

physician and then do an evaluation of his psychologicals/dr report and then

decide if he is eligible. I asked, would you like to know the places where he

HAS interviewed and or contacted and was told " no. " So, I don't know. It

appeared to not be a collaborative process at all. They just identify which hole

is closest to his peg shape and then attempt to stuff him in it. Even though he

had an extensive Voc eval from high school and he now has 12 months of culinary

training...they weren't interested in that AND even though he knows exactly what

type of culinary job he'd like to have, they weren't interested. No " box " on

their form for that!

I did ask about time line...about two weeks to get the ball rolling for evals. I

also asked about training to drive forklift and again, they " could " do that, but

only if his evaluation warranted it. I was concerned too when DS indicated he

DID want supported employment. But maybe that is better...I don't know. I just

want him out of the house for a few hours a day right now!

We'll see. I couldn't get an answer on what exactly they do...they don't do

anything on living skills, independent living, etc. cause DS said he wanted a

job and an apartment and she laughed and said they couldn't help him there.

Laughed? Would seem she would have resources to address that???

Just very frustrated. Beyond frustrated really. While waiting for VR appt. we

listed all the places he's put in applications just related to culinary and

there are over 45 places. Of those six interviews. He is still waiting on the

assisted living facitlity where he took " compatibility test on 14th after two

interviews with the chef and has heard nothing. He called the chef back

yesterday and asked if they have made a decision and of course, heard nothing.

We are sort of running out of options. Yesterday he started filling out

applications for warehouse work, which is what he did before JobCorps. I would

cheer anything!
