Experience major factor in picking mold remover

By Ruane, Staff writer May 01, 2002

The mold remediation process at Moss Side Elementary School is being done by

Mistik Insurance Restoration and is expected to be finished by mid-July.

Gateway School Board voted 5-3 last week to approve Mistik as the

lowest responsible bidder that met all of he district's specifications,

which included having at least two years of experience in mold removal.

Mistik's bid was $373,000, which was about $145,000 more than the

lowest bid. But the company that submitted the lowest bid didn't meet the

district's requirement for experience.

The district has hired Dr. Ginsburg of Central Environmental and

Occupational Training as a consultant for the project.

He is overseeing the remediation work and reviewing various results

from tests such as air monitoring.

Negative test results for each room and section of the building will

serve as the district's proof that the mold problem has been solved.

Two sets of clearances must be passed during the project - one after

each room has been cleaned, the other after each section l is cleaned.

Rooms are being sealed off and tested before the next site is targeted.

Rich Sczur, Gateway's building and grounds manager, said the new roof

on the building should protect against the threat of new mold forming once

the school reopens for the next academic year.

The administration and building and grounds officials will be looking

into whether carpeting in the school should be replaced or removed

altogether and supplanted by tile flooring. The district also is looking

into whether its insurance carrier will be contributing to the project's

cost.
