Guest guest
This all sounds very familiar. I have a 13 yo aspie daughter and had similar experiences with her. She had infant colitis and cried for the first 6 months of her life. She walked early and met the other milestones. she did not tolerate transitions and could start screaming and crying for no apparent reason. she did not like to socialize outside the home and could occupy herself for hours. she was able to do some pretty remarkable things early on, as I think many of us here have observed in our own children. During her last year of preschool thru second grade, she was very outgoing and social. She had a great imagination and many children loved to play with her because her ideas were entertaining, but play was mostly on her terms. I noticed her speech was slow and spoke to teachers, they did not see the problem. the pediatrician did not observe the oddities I saw. Third grade is when things began to change socially for her. her peers were maturing socially and she was not and she couldn’t keep up with the conversation and began to withdraw. The summer before 4th grade I paid for a speech/audio eval and found delays and audio processing disorder. She started speech therapy thru school and by end of 5th grade was diagnosed with anxiety and in 6th grade aspergers. My point is that as parents we notice things that the professionals may not. I do think the medical community is getting smarter at recognizing the signs. but I also think there is so much overlap with the symptoms and the severity of a particular symptom can vary from day to day, it is confusing and difficult to nail down. it is common for our aspie kids to have multiple diagnosis, for example presently my daughter is diagnosed with aspergers and ocd. I wonder if this spectrum of diagnosis will evey be sorted out. Welcome, I am sure you will find the support and answers you need here. Regards, melody k.
