Guest guest
Hi Lesley , You are not alone on this issue . I'm on this roller-coaster ride , too . We've gone cold turkey these past months (we)is also his teacher with him wearing regular underwear . My son is 13 and I just decided something had to be done . He's doing great at school , has his accidents . At home once he arrives from school he goes directly to the restroom and removes his pants , sits on the toilet and actually pees in the pot . This took 2 weeks at home to follow this habit training schedule . It took about 1 month and a half for him to understand of feeling wet . I charted his toileting schedule . I've given in on him wearing disposable pull-ups at nights and outings . No fights in that area where he use to want his pull-ups only , but I still take him to the restroom about every 2 hours . Sounds like you're doing fine , its just keeping seated . Does he have a favorite toy , book , or video he could hold to keep his mind occupied ? Do you use a timer , so that he may try to understand not to rush ? I know our list will share what has worked on keeping their kids seated . Hope you hear from Beth she had sent me some nice information on this issue . In the mean time I'll share some sites if you had not run across them . http://www.teacch.com/toilet.htm http://www.accessin.com.au/~paris/autism/toilet.htm http://members.spree.com/autism/autism3t.htm http://www.challengenet.com/~onemom/page21b.html http://home.san.rr.com/t/treatment.html (scroll down to the left hand side under toilet-training http://www.bbbautism.com ( under PDF Articles ) Wishing you lots of luck , hang in there as well as I'm still dealing with this challenge . Guest guest
a, What joy, proud MAMA ! Hope to be in those shoes when crosses this line . Miralax is that prescribed ? Did he have constipation alot ? I have noticed this on and when he does not poop , I do see some behavior changes so sometimes I just give him a stool softener . Then back to being good or active participating when asked to do things . Yep ! You deserve lots of hugs, because I know your going to school for a career and everything you've worked with has shown good accomplishments . Next challenge : ) . Take care . Guest guest
That Miralax is great stuff...hasn't helped us with potty training yet but it is so much better than anything else we've tried for Nick's chronic constipation. He now has a dirty diaper almost every day which is a miracle for him! The doctor does have to prescribe it though. Re: potty training a, What joy, proud MAMA ! Guest guest
thanks irma!! ya miralax is fairly new, cant even find it in my 2002 drug guide, its non habit forming laxative sort of, it pulls water into the stools, nathan has a horrible history of constipation, and then they explaig something else too, but i can remember the name for the life of me, something about the intestine stretching so bm and gas can go around blockage etc, all i know its has helped trememdously in the potty training dept it took a few months like most meds do, but after that, wahooo. shawna. --- ICANFIELD@... wrote: > a, > What joy, proud MAMA ! For I took some little candies and small toys and put them in the little plastic eggs. For treats to big to fit I put a slip of paper in with the name of the toy. He got to pick an egg whenever he was dry for a period of time. The first hour we did every five minutes and then increased the time every hour. I have heard of moms that put the child on the potty chair in front of a video and sat with them until they started peeing and then made a great party to the child realized what they were supposed to be doing on the chair. Guest guest
Hi Everyone, Well, it's the third week of potty training. I thought we were just grooving along until this weekend. Rochelle put her hand in the you know what! Gross! And, she is pooping like 3x a day. I don't know what's going on. We had her going on the potty successfully 4x a day but many accidents too. Really wierd since the first week she was going 4x a day total. Did I mention I forgot to praise her one time. She got off the potty and I didn't look because she had just wet herself before I put her on. Well, everything has been downhill since then. On another note, started sign classes at our local ARC. They got a grant and it is free for everyone. So, in addition to pictures I will start signing again. Anything to get her communicating. Guest guest
Gee ! Just when you were glad Rochelle was getting the hang of it . They will do good for a time period and kapluk ! Seems like Rochelle is pretty quick . Hang in there , she is still getting the idea of the routine but of course now Rochelle wants it her way , that cutie . What type of rewards are you giving her ? Even if its just for sitting on the potty . Because this use to be a chore just trying to enter the restroom , then sitting on the toilet . I had to start slow when I decided it was time for the potty training . Are you using a chart to keep track of her potty time? Sorry , : ( got to brag about today he went on his own twice and did both in the toilet . I too , have those roller-coaster rides with , you're not alone . Luck this coming week . Diane , that is nice to hear on those sign classes . I've been wanting to do that but never had the chance . I know this year may still be out of the picture as so much other stuff is involved . Studying/working , parent-training classes , conferences , & so on . Next week assisting with Special Olympics Basketball . Oh ! I almost forgot , I was " thinking " about when our child accomplishes the toilet , which probably flew off your mind at this time but the trophy would be a " golden diaper or pull- up " , yeah right ! Ok , get some rest after your on-going cleaning . Irma, 13,DS/ASD > Hi Everyone, > > Well, it's the third week of potty training. I thought we were just grooving > along until this weekend. Its a huge one with magic lights . I have to still inquire info . > Stole if from a potty video and changed the words. She smiles and giggles. No no, not stole , borrowed . But , yep , we have to keep a supply of books to keep his hands occupied and teach him to keep hands off the toilet seat . There is a way to tell if she has gone . Can you imagine , there might of been a possibility of already to have ben toilet trained if I knew about the ASD back then . I love when Rochelle comes to my bed but I had to put a stop to it because she started coming 2 or 3x a night. Now in the morning at 5:00 or so I go downstairs with her and cuddle on sofa. Glad you still made it out though and it helps to get out for awhile , even if its to educate yourself because you're with other challenging people . Hmm, talking on first day , excuse me . jk . Unless she just went or it's time for bed when she has pull up on. Nah , don't feel like that . You do what you can when working with Rochelle , whatever works. I place plastic pads almost all over the house and when visiting other homes, will know where to sit. So the cleaning carpet has cut down some , unless he gets off it and has an accident . Just remember who makes the decision in the house . You're teaching Rochelle well . Think about when they get older, not a pretty picture as they reach 12 and up . They get wise, stronger , heavier and harder to deal with sometimes . Remember our kids are smart. So we must shape their behavior around them. You start small , break it down , the more skills you teach to do herself , she will give back. Kid acts up , why ? What did you ask of the child ? Yep, they'll cry , stir up aggressive behavior , hit , scream but guess what, you can be stubborn too. Always remember this question -What is the best thing I can do for my child ? Believe in her. Always remember reinforcers are great motivators. Any behavior you decide to address will go up before it goes down. No attention to negative behavior. They don't know what to expect. We too, had to put a stop with at that age and he will not want US to lie down on his bed anymore as he has gotten older. When I want to lay on his bed so that I could read him a story or just to comfort him until he falls asleep . Nah ! He tells me " get up " , points to my bedroom and tells me " over there " , " bed " . Like go to your bed . Rochelle is an early bed, like . Even if he sleeps late , he'll get up and wander to his TV room or stay in bed listening to his tape until somebody is up . It was not like this when he was younger. I had alot of fear of things he could get hurt, make major mess , yucky mess with you know what(#2), or wandered off. You never know what surprises are awaiting as you wake up . Guest guest
Unfortunatly, we have a very hard time showing a causal relationship between any of the things we ahve done and our sucess in teeth brushing and potty trainng, probably the best advice I can give is: don't give up. Keep trying and someday something will click. Things we did do: Put her on the potty a lot and encourage her, esspecially at opportune times such as getting up and after swimming Reward significantly if she went on the toilet. Let her watch mom and big sis Let her go without a diaper and get herself wet sometimes Put on a diaper after she had an accident Tried to get her to drink as much as possible so she couldn't hold it as long Things we didn't do: Pay the extra money for size six diapers, we figured if they were a bit uncomfortable that was ok. Go anywhere without diapers and a change of clothes Try to force her to go Get upset (at least we tried not to) if she made a big poopy mess all over the house Things that happend right before things started to click: She really didn't like having a diaper on, they were too small and impeded her movement She had an accident in shorts and got her feet wet (she is particular about her feet) This got her VERY upset She first started going consitantly in the morning, then at school (they put her on the potty at 9:30 and 10:30 everyday - she never went at 9:30 but started always going at 10:30) and now she is starting to come to us when she needs to go, she has been accident free for four days now. Guest guest
I just wanted to update you on the Potty training. Rochelle started to play with her poop the other night while DH had her on the potty. It was not pretty. Thank goodness we were both there for clean up. I was aware this might happen and forgot to clue in Husband. Sooooooo, back to the potty on the floor. She is going about 2x a day but we still have accidents. She is on a timed schedule. She does not ask to go. But she will go to her book when she has to go sometimes. Diane
