Guest guest
Dear , My cholesterol levels are high and have been since I've had hyper-T. Previously they were in the low normal range. Guest guest
Just for the record, , I was hyperT and had very high cholesterol. It was 266 last year and I got it down to 220 last month by eating oat bran in the morning. But I don't think low cholesterol caused your hyperT. It sounds like you were a bit overenthusiastic with some of the supplements you were taking. Thanks for the info re: copper toxicity. And I find it interesting that you are not curious about your TSH T3/T4... But I am pleased that you feel well and are " researching " this mineral deficiency theory. I hope you're right about it!! Guest guest
and Everyone, My LDL cholesterol is low, however, my HDL cholesterol is low also, while my triclyerides are high. My heart doctor told me my heart risk factors were tied to my low HDL and high Triclyerides and that most people suffering thyroid problems had high triclyerides. Also, a factor in determining high risk heart attack is the VL/LDL ratio. I feel that I have thyroid problems BECAUSE I allowed myself to start medication of Premarin and Provera in 1985 and then consented to a total hysterecomy in 1991, then took just Premarin for the past 7 years. I sincerely believe I could have avoided all of it had I been more concerned about probing and understanding my health and less trusting of a doctors word. I feel the hormones have contributed to the destroying of my thyroid gland, thus now, Hashimotos. Just some food for thought!! ______________________________________________________________________ No tricks, no gimmicks - just a great intro rate for Internet users! Guest guest
Hi , In response to your question regarding low cholesterol and thyroid disorders: my understanding is that low cholesterol is actually a symptom of hyperthyroidism. With the point you're bringing up, possibly visa versa. I honestly don't know about hypothryoidism and cholesterol. My cholesterol has always been low, but dropped even more about the time I was diagnosed this past June It was 127 in June. Two years ago, it had been 147. About 10 years ago, it was 176. I would think that there is literature out there on this topic. Unfortunately, where I am at the moment, I don't have the capability to log onto the web for a literature search. Take care, Vivian ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Just got the results of most recent bloodwork and must confess that I am very disappointed. My TSH is still 0, and my T4 levels have gone up slightly from 14.3 to 15.2. My cholesterol level has risen from mid-normal to high end normal (193), the highest it has ever been. T3 is 40,(24-39)unchanged. I had hoped that there would be even a slight improvement by now, with taking both the supplements(almost five weeks now) and 300mg PTU daily. I'm seeing my Endo in a few days. He is a great guy and sees RAI as an absolute desperate situation and is not even considering it at the moment, so I am thankful for that. I'm interested to know if anybody has had an actual improvement in their T3,T4 and TSH. Two months I had a normal glucose level and today the results came in at 133(65-115), so I hope I'm not looking at the possibility of diabetes now. I'm not feeling at all sure that the supplementation is doing me any good.I have more energy, without doubt, but the bloodwork speaks for itself. I,d appreciate any thoughts!!! Guest guest
, I have been donating blood for 2 or more years, and everytime I donate, they check my cholesterol and send me the results in the mail. so I've been keeping a record of it...see what you think. These are the results: 10/96----221 12/96---190 2/97----218 4/97----231 6/97---193 8/97---232 11/97--219 1/98---214 3/98---221 5/98---194 8/98---259--------this is about the time when I found out that I had low thyroid. I am going to give blood next week, and am anxious to see what it will be, because I have always been very careful about what I eat, and it seems like the more I watch what I eat, now, the higher my chol. has gotten. The same with my weight. I know these are not really high readings, but for me they are, seeing that my level was at 140 to 170 a few years ago.. Something caused it to get higher...maybe this low-fat craze. I also have a hard time with my iron when I donate. Most of the time I have to return because of a low iron count...normal for giving blood is 12.5 and I run about 11.5 to 11.9. I am anxious to see if the kelp has helped my iron level Chris ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
From looking at your Cholesterol levels, they are very high. Are you taking anything for it? Does your doctor know how high they are? Are you saying that it's the thyroid that causes high cholesterol? sandy ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Hi Dina..your numbers still indicate hyperthyroidism and I have about the same cholesterol level that you mentioned. I agree that stress plays a big role in this condition. Can you make any life style changes or can you begin doing yoga or therapy to help with that issue? I would give up the butter and eggs and eat oat bran. My cholesterol went down twenty points since eating Cheerios and oat bran cereals for breakfast. Good luck Esther ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Dear Dina, You can eat all the eggs and butter you want, as long as you don't eat any sugar. Cholesterol in your body is not caused by the amount of fat you eat, or the kind of fats, but rather by a chemical reaction between the fat and the sugar. I know this because my husband is on the Atkins' diet, which is eat all the fat you want, but don't eat sugar. He eats tons of fat, but no sugar at all, and his cholesterol is about 120. I have a sweet tooth (I'm always trying to give up sugar, but haven't been able to do it for longer than a few months at a time), so I hardly eat any fat. I do eat some, because we all need some, but I keep to healthy fats like olive oil, and maybe three eggs a week. My cholesterol is consistently in the 160 range. Have you been eating sugar along with the butter and eggs? If you have, I would give up the sugar rather than the butter and eggs, as the butter and eggs are healthier than the sugar (they have lots of nutrient value, whereas the sugar has none). If you haven't been eating any sugar, then maybe I need to revisit this theory. Hope you feel better, AntJoan ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
, I'm somewhat surprised at your doctor for prescribing Lipitor for you but not stunned. Numerous times I've been given prescriptions for drugs that are absolutely out of the question and even dangerous for people with liver disease. My Hepatologist told me to always check with him before I take anything another doctor prescribed. You were probably lucky that you had an " incident " and stopped taking the drug on your own. Please, be very wary about any new drugs you're prescribed unless they're prescribed by a Hepatologist or someone who is very familiar with liver disease. My understanding is that the cholesterol lowering drugs and all anti-inflammatory drugs, especially Naproxen, should be avoided like the plague. Yet, people in this group are being prescribed these meds all of the time. Your pharmacy is supposed to do a computer cross check, should be aware of your medical condition (liver disease) and should warn you that you have been prescribed potentially harmful meds. Ours has asked us if we have any chronic medical conditions and have also warned us not to take new drugs when they see a potential problem when taken with other meds or our condition. Ask your pharmacy if they can do this, though I suspect that they might even be required to do so by law. Take care, Geri

Guest guest
I have been reading the posts about high cholesterol and liver disease and I really think the Prednisone has caused mine to be high. When I was sick and in the process of being diagnosed a couple of months ago, all my enzymes were abnormal, but cholesterol was normal. It was 130. Once I started taking the Prednisone two weeks later it was 190 and another two weeks it was 220 and I am certain my diet hasn't changed. I have even really been watching it more now than before. So now all my enzymes are normal and the cholesterol is high. I thought I read that the Prednisone could cause high cholesterol. Does anybody know? Guest guest
Hi Audra, Yes, prednisone causes high cholesterol. How high varies from person to person - just like all the other prednisone side effects vary.
Guest guest
I think that the cholesterol may contribute to that. When i was going through the worst part of my liver disease my cholesterol too was 120-130 and my triglycerides were like 70. And that is a fact that with liver disease usually those numbers are low. Guest guest
Lori, I'm confused about the cholesterol/triglycerides issue. Both of mine have been elevated since I first started getting sick and cholesterol continues to be elevated though triglycerides are normal recently. I thought I'd read that liver disease causes elevated cholesterol, but apparently your experience is otherwise. Since you've been through the " ultimate " experience with liver disease, you're definitely more of an authority than I am. All I see are the numbers on my lab tests. Only recently have I had access to my pre-AIH records and both were normal just 6 months before my AIH diagnosis and both have been elevated ever since until the recent reduction in triglycerides. It's easy to blame everything on our liver disease when in fact, I'd be presumptuous to assume that I couldn't simply have high cholesterol because it's developed with time and not connected to AIH or meds at all. I haven't asked my doctor about high cholesterol for months, since he told me I can't take Zocor or similar drugs and that I don't have to worry about the elevations. I have only rarely had elevated blood pressure and it's never been alarmingly high, so maybe that's what he's looking at? Take care, Geri
Guest guest
According to information on the ALF site, the liver is responsible for " controlling the production and excretion of cholesterol " . When I was really ill and at the time I was diagnosed, my cholesterol was really low - 138. It had been in the 190-210 range for years prior to my illness. Once I started treatment with prednisone and Imuran, it went up as high as 280. The last time I had it checked it was back to the 190 level, so maybe my liver is sufficiently recovered to perform this function properly. I hope that is the case since it appears we can't take medications for high cholesterol anyway.

Guest guest
Yes Barbara, My transplant center told me to get a correct reading on labs, especially cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose a person should be fasting, and fasting at my center is evening meal before 7:00 p.m. and nothing to eat after that, if so a light snack, and nothing to drink after midnight. They told me that way if you have your blood drawn between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. the next morning you are at least 12 hours without food. This was very hard fer me before transplant. When the liver disease was the worst, I would get very sick by the time I had my labs drawn, but I did it to get accurate labs. I am currently getting my labs done every 3 weeks because I am on the taper to be weaned off the prednisone. I am almost there. I have 20 days to go!! Hope this helps. I know each center is different, but I still think it is the only way to get accurate labs, is to be fasting. Lori C. AIH Liver Tx 3~11~97. Remember " No one should go through this alone. Guest guest
Barbara Ann, Now I wonder if there's any consistent significance in elevated cholesterol in liver patients. Maybe it depends on the type of AIH involved? I took another look at my labs from the last couple of years and see that my cholesterol could be high one time and 3 weeks later, normal, then 4 weeks after that, high again. It was no higher when I was most sick than they are now while I'm in remission, but my cholesterol is almost always elevated, and it wasn't ever elevated in the years before I was diagnosed. For whatever reason, I'm rarely told to fast before labs. My LV Hepatologist doesn't necessarily order labs each time I see him, so I don't fast. He doesn't note that the tests should be fasting. Even Scripps would frequently order labs on the spot, without requiring fasting. Could be they are checking specific items that don't require fasting for a reading and they aren't worried about things like cholesterol and glucose. My new doctor, however, specifically told me that he wants to do fasting labs. Unlike many of the doctors in LV, he has blood drawn by RNs in his own office. Many LV physicians don't have actual RNs on staff (though I realize that an RN isn't necessary to draw blood.) My husband's cardiologist always orders only fasting labs for him. For now I'm comfortable with my cholesterol like it is. It hasn't worried anyone and it doesn't ever get phenomenally high, so why buy trouble? Take care, Geri
Guest guest
Cholesterol can be up for quite a while during cleansing. I have used a multipal amino acid blend and added extra Lysinal and arginine. It is not only good for the health of the liver but also has put a pulse back in my ankle where previously I had none. cholesterol I want to thank everyone for their help with my previous inquires. I now have another. I had that blood work done that I had put off for a week because of die off. Can any one think of why my cholesterol would be up? Could it be attributed to the cleanses? Should I now do a liver cleanse or kidney cleanse next? I haven't changed my diet... maybe just eating a little less. I have been doing both the bowel and parasite cleanses. Thanks, KimSubscription email: bowel cleanse-subscribeegroups
Guest guest
Okay so am I in danger if I do a kidney + arterial cleanse (resulting in a lymphatic cleanse)? Should I be taking something to help flush out the cholesterol? Will amino acid do it alone? Thanks, Kim Cholesterol can be up for quite a while during cleansing. Guest guest
what is the deal with all the different strains of kombucha. my intuition tells me, along with everything ithat i've read, that it is a great thing. so many people have reported success-- and yet i tested weak for it with kinesiology. have you ever heard of people not doing well with kombucha if they have an extreme yeast problem or an extreme parasite problem-- perhaps the die off would be too intense?
