Guest guest
's been prescribed Zyprexa. Is anyone's child on this med and what improvements, side effects, have you seen in your child's behavior? Isn't this the same drug classification as Risperdal without all the side effects? The new doctor stated Lithium should have never been given to , being that most patients are at least 12 to 13 yrs. of age and very aggressive when they are put on this drug! So, we're stopping that one. Exelon, the Alz' med prescribed by the neurologist, should also be stopped if it shows no improvement. He says is too young to benefit from any slowing of dementia or Alz' IF he were to get it. He would usually be prescribed this drug when he is an adult, to slow any effects that may be present at that time, but not now. So, we are going to the neurologist on Wednesday and stopping that one. Lastly, Risperdal will be stopped since Zyprexa is replacing that one. The only drug that will continue will be the Trileptal, because the doctor says we don't want to stop everything all at once, especially since the Trileptal was effective. So, Zyprexa will be started tonight.....sigh.....we will see. Any info on this med will be helpful. Thanks, P.S. MHMR will provide a psychologist to do another autism test and also the same psychologist will also provide a behavior function assessment....hear that Joan? hehe.....thanks for your help! Guest guest
Hi , Another med trial, luck with this one. No info here to respond to. Fingers crossed that you'll see some improvements. Glad the MHMR are willing to redo the testing. Don't forget if you need any information on any thing around your area, contact The Tarrant County Autism Society for further assistance or for some references, 817-390-2829 or 817-531-8261. I know there was a mom with a similar situation that belong to the Autism society group and she dealt & fought with the HEB school district, even if the label is not confirmed, it still falls back dealing with the Special Education or Special Needs. Stay posted. Irma, 13,DS/ASD

We've been on the Seroquel and Risperal route.....Leah knows what happened with on the Seroquel, but it was the miracle drug for little Ashton! Right you are, some kids it will work wonders and some have drastic effects. We will see....I am not optimistic anymore and know we've been there, done that with most med's. If this is same drug classification as those others I've mentioned, why would they think this one would work for ? Obviously, they MUST have something different?! Guest guest
doesn't it seem like you should get rid of the ones they want to d/c before starting a new one? How can you really know if the new one (or the ones that are there along with the ones they want to stop) work? Too many changes at one time for me!! I'm very particular about changing only one medication in any way at a time and filling out behavior charts as I do. Given the number of medications they want to change (d/c or reduce) it will take a while....two weeks per change I would think would be the minimum amount of time between changes. Poor ! Hang in there. j

I think if a med has drowsiness as a side effect can't handle it and tries to get extra sensory input to function. I think that some drugs also give head aches -my guess with the zyprexa. The only drug we found that had a good effect on was paxil. But, his pica (eating non-edibles) became out of control. Not good, so we had to change it. I wish we knew sooo much more about the brain. Guest guest
Vicki, No. He use to take resperdal. he took it for about 4 years. At first it was great but he started to get tardia dyski (sp)? (Motor movemeants) I trie dsome other things but nothing helped until I tried the Abilify. it is in the resperdal family BUT has lesser side effects. It has helped J so much! not a cure of course (I pray one day) but now J is so much better with aggrestion and anxiety. He only takes 7 and a half mgs thru-out the whole day. Guest guest
Karac took it and it caused over 30 lbs in weight gain. Pat K
Guest guest
We tried the Abilify with Karac and it increased aggression and decreased language. All these kids respond differently. It is trial and error. The most effective treatment for Karac has been .5 Clonidine and .25 Zanax. Pat K
Guest guest
We have not tried the Zyprexa yet as he has not had a major meltdown in the last 24 hours. He does take Seroquel, Risperdal, and Paxil for behavior issues now. He already has weight gain side effects. I don't think he is in any pain, but then again he doesn't feel pain like most children do. We have checked his teeth and they are good. Most of his aggressive behavior comes from control issues and me challenging his behavior. Other times it is from environmental changes throwing him out of whack. I will let you guys know how he does when we try it for the first time. Since it is only for when he has a meltdown, maybe he will respond well to it. Guest guest
He takes ALL of that medicine??? That sounds like an awful lot. It seems to me to try to find something (Behavioury) to do instead of using a med everytime he has a meltdown. I am not against meds...........J is taking Abilify and it has helped alot but still sounds like a lot of meds He is taking. Guest guest
We have been trying behavior strategies for years and will continue to try them. I don't want my son on so many medications either. He is just so difficult to handle that I am running out of ideas. He gets aggressive with me and his siblings to the point of injury. My house is full of holes in the walls and broken doors. I have tried taking him to a psychologist for help with behavior, but I have not found one that will get down on the floor and interact with . I do miss Beverly Braman. She was awesome with him when he was younger. We have put him in a 6 month program at Avondale House in the past, but he was abused by a staff member so this did not help. If you have any other ideas please feel free to mention them. Guest guest
Hi , My son (5) has ocd and bipolar. I never have tried him on Zyprexa. He was put on Prozac, than Zoloft, and had a manic reaction to both.He was literally bouncing off the walls on the SSRI'S. He has been on Abilify since the summer. Different mood-stabilizers work for different things to stabilize the mood,as well as the anti-psychotics.Some work more on the depression, and others on the mania, while some work on both. Hope this helps some. Hugs Judy
Guest guest
My 11 yr. old DD has had a great response to Zyprexa for her OCD, but she doesn't have bi-polar. It has also caused a huge (50%) amount of weight gain rapidly for her. Dina
Guest guest
Hi! I would like to know if someone already used the medication Zyprexa. Comments or recomendations are very welcomed. The plan is to change, slowly, from the medication Risperdal to Zyprexa. Thank you, All the best! Pedro, Myllene, Thiago (17) and Victor (11-HFA).
