Diatomite is essentially amorphous, hydrated, or opaline silica with various contaminates, such as silica sand, clay minerals, iron, alkalites, and alkaline earths. Unprocessed diatomite has a hardness of 4-6.5 on Moh's scale. It is widely used as a filter medium, as industrial filler, for thermal and acoustical insulation and in ceramics. The largest deposits in the United States are in California. diatom: A microscopic unicellular plant which has an envelope (frustule) or outer skeleton of hydrated silica, close to opal in composition, and usually in two parts, though some have a ring-shaped frustule and these grow in chains. They inhabit both fresh water and salt water, and their fructules form masses of diatomaceous earth or shale attaining a thickness of thousands of feet. But during the discussions about it a few weeks ago, these are the notes I took: Diatomaceous earth destroys the mucosa lining of the intestines. It kills parasites by piercing the mucosa lining of the bugs and literally dehydrating them. It has the exact same effect on the colon. This information was from Marcus, who is very knowledgeable and periodically contributes a lot to this list. He felt that one list member's colitis might be due at least in part to it. It also emerged from the discussions that the main component of DE is silica, which is toxic if too much is taken. The part you mention about it possibly puncturing the walls of the GI tract with the sharp edges I don't remember being discussed then, yet Russ has just brought it up now so it seems that that too may be a legitimate concern. Bentonite did seem to be preferred in those discussions, but I also remember someone saying that bentonite has aluminum in it and shouldn't be taken for too long either. I could be wrong about this as I can't find any notes on it, but it is my recollection. Robin G.

Guest guest
You can usually find it at a tack shop or farmers supplies location. It however isn't considered for human consumption but I can appreciate where you're going here. It really is an interesting subject but I'll reframe from getting into it regarding human or animal consumption. It is also good for the likes of fleas by causing them to bleed to death after hopping around on it as it's like sharp glass to them. Dale Da_@... Guest guest
Hi Sharon ~ We've been using Codex Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth for 5 years now. We keep it in our goat herb/grain mix, in our feed mix for the fowl, and when worming use for the wolves, dogs, and 20 something outdoor country cats. We have consumed it (it's chalky tasting) mixed in water. I have customers who drive from Los Angeles to pick up a 50 lb. bag of DE and consume a heaping tsp. in a full glass of water 3x/day before meals and swear by its effectiveness at removing parasites, better bowels, clean/non-greasy skin/pores, and no acne. It's also excellent for external parasites - fleas, lice, mites, flies, ants, etc. and we use it in our gardens regularly, tho DE will kill beneficial insects as well. Yes, humans can certainly consume it, but we've always followed Hulda's black walnut, cloves, and wormwood for parasite removal. Even tho there are lots of capsules to take, that we encapsulate ourselves, I prefer it over the taste of DE... Guest guest
I was surprised as well, until I recalled some websites I was looking at about Doctors without Borders and U.N. health forces... apparently there is FOOD GRADE and NON FOOOD grade DE- and unfortunately some companies dont care to make the distinction. NEVER use any DE that is not clearly marked food grade on or in humans or pets. I believe the difference is in processing but there is varying opinions. Some say that if the DE is not crystalline ( as happens with pool filter DE that heated first) it cant harm the body, others say its a function of how well powdered and hence less sharp the particles are. And then how can one tell without a microscope?? diatoms are microscopic creatures- with silica ( glass) shells and if processed one way, a dust of sharp needles of microscopic size remains to get into skin, mucous membranes and lung tissue. since food grade is " softer " and more rounded particles how can it be effective as insect control...then the sharp edges which pierce insects bodies wont be there?? Its not so much a dehydratant as a physical mechanism. They only dry out due to being pricked. No sharp edges no pricks. I have NO idea how it works internally--as an irritant to parasites or chemically, so in the gut it may not matter as to the sharpness of the particles. Im guessing it WOULD matter if non food grade was ingested as those sharp slivers will pierce the lining of the gut and travel!. IMHO find a reputable company and email to ask about their claims for " food grade " and satisfy your needs of safety. for me, Im sticking with herbal oils topically applied! be well Finette > > I'm surprised at the suggestion to use this on pets. Guest guest
Yeah, there is little to no connection that can be found online between DE and candida. It is normally sold for killing parasites and is known to do that pretty well. The way I made the connection (which I'm still not completely convinced there is one) is that I tried a product called syclovir. One more magic bullet internet product with a whole " what is candida and how do you beat it " kind of website. I tried it and noticed it did help somewhat with bloating and reflux. Nothing huge, but it seemed to smooth out digestion a bit. I went to read about it on curezone, and there wasn't much, but someone said to just buy food grade DE cause it was basically the same thing at a much lower price. Well after searching the info online about syclovir and finding no clear distinction between it and common DE, I e-mailed the makers and asked what the difference was, and his response was something along the lines of " We cannot tell you what makes our product different from others. Go by if it works for you. " which basically said to me, " there is no difference besides better advertising. " So long story short, I went from buying a canister of 11 oz of syclovir for $40 to a 2 lb bag of food grade DE for 17. No real noticeable difference between the two products. So what is the connection between DE and candida? I don't really think there is one. Somehow it seems to aid in digestion a bit though, and you might get out a few parasites if that is a problem for you. I wouldn't pay another $40 for 11 oz of the stuff, but 17 bucks for a bag that will last a few monthes ain't too bad of a price to get that little added digestive bonus it provides, whatever it may be exactly. greg > > Hope some can tell us more about diatomaceous earth. Guest guest
I am on Biamonte's protocol for candida, and Diamataceous Earth is definitely a big part of it. Candida and parasites go hand in hand, so both have to be equally addressed or you will keep getting recurrences. I am not exactly sure why he chooses DE other than to address parasite issues, but it is a constant in the protocol, along with numerous other substances and anti-fungals. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Hi Terry: I know that diatomaceous earth is used to control parasites in some animals like chickens. The explanation of how it works is that it puts lots of tiny microscopic cuts in the parasites bodies which eventually kills them, but the cuts are so tiny, that it doesn't affect larger animals like chickens or other hosts of parasites like humans. So if parasites go hand in hand with candida, and the DE is being used specifically for the parasites, then perhaps all that white stuff enveloping the stools is parasite related, i.e. the secretions of the parasites and webbing stuff that help them hang on in the digestive tract. Someone else mentioned the white stuff followed by more definite " strings. " Sounds like parasites to me. Just a layman's guess, tho. If they are parasites, then it would be expected that there should be a lot of them coming out over time because parasites multiply in the thousands and rather quickly. Also consider how many feet the intestinal tract is. Generally, where there's one, there's plenty more where they came from. Take care, Marla -- Re: diatomaceous earth I am on Biamonte's protocol for candida, and Diamataceous Earth is definitely a big part of it. Guest guest
Shonda, I'm so sorry to hear about your son. I hope he's feeling better. About mold in the house. . . I rented a home about 10 years ago and during that time period has nearly daily bouts of brain fog! When we moved out of the house, we discovered huge growths of black mold behind our bed. We had already known there was a problem, but it was more extensive than we realized. Have you tried any cleanup for the mold? I read that hydrogen peroxide can help. . . maybe there are other products too? What about an air filtration system? Anything to help you feel better. Also, have you tried diatomaceous earth? I'm hoping to purchase some this week and try it out. Hopefully it helps a bit. Guest guest
, & nbsp; I moved out of the house and the house is being tested right now. & nbsp; But the bottom line is, I get sick being in that house so not matter what the test come back regarding the mold, I can't live there any more. & nbsp; So we are in limbo right now. & nbsp; I moved in w/my neighbor across the street and we have & nbsp;the up stairs rooms. & nbsp; She has a huge 11 room house and most of up stairs if vacant cause they plan on moving in a few years and put most of their stuff in storage. & nbsp; Any how, the bad side to this is she has 8 dogs. & nbsp; Two stay in doors all the time and crap and pee all over the hardwood floors. & nbsp; It totally grosses me out. & nbsp; So when she was gone this weekend, me, my husband and a maid spent all day Saturday sanitizing her house w/three bottles of lysol. & nbsp; It was beyond gross. & nbsp; But we got the job done. & nbsp; But still the dogs won't always use the piddle pads she lays down for them. & nbsp; The top floor is clean. & nbsp; Just the down stairs is gross and that is where the kitchen is at. & nbsp; And then like an idiot.....when I was cleaning the up stairs where we are staying w/our 3 year old son, I took the vacuum out of our house to vacuum the throw rug in the room we are staying it. & nbsp; BAD MISTAKE....cause what ever was in OUR old & nbsp;vacuum has made my nose and throat irritate and still irritated since Sat. & nbsp; And my son's too. & nbsp; What an idiot I was. & nbsp; I hope I didn't just spread mold spores in the only clean room we have to live in. & nbsp; Cripe. & nbsp; I took diatacmacious earth when I thought I might have parasite. & nbsp; I had no parasites and it really didn't change any thing for me either. & nbsp; I still have like 3 jars left of the stuff. & nbsp; So why the diatamacious earth, other than to rid yourself of parasites? & nbsp; I just want a " clean " place to live and if I can find one I don't know how we can afford it and still pay the mortgage on our house that we can't live in......what a mess. & nbsp; Shonda Rescue & nbsp;until there are none; don't breed or buy while homeless animals still die. I rented a home about 10 years ago and during that time period has nearly daily bouts of brain fog! & nbsp; When we moved out of the house, we discovered huge growths of black mold behind our bed. & nbsp; We had already known there was a problem, but it was more extensive than we realized. Have you tried any cleanup for the mold? & nbsp; I read that hydrogen peroxide can help. . . maybe there are other products too? & nbsp; What about an air filtration system? & nbsp; Anything to help you feel better. Also, have you tried diatomaceous earth? & nbsp; I'm hoping to purchase some this week and try it out. & nbsp; Hopefully it helps a bit. Re: diatomaceous earth I had a horrid case of yeast down below for MONTHS on end. & amp;nbsp; then my neighbor told me to be checked for gardnerella cause they kept treating her for yeast too, but nothing seemed to work and she had gardnerella instead. & amp;nbsp; So I told my dr. to test me for this. (out here the dr.'s are lazy, and don't care, trust me....they are a sad bunch of them). & amp;nbsp; Well I did have gardnerella and they treated me for that and also the yeast. & amp;nbsp; Gardnerella is like yeast in a sense that you have it, but your body keeps it in check, but when you immune system goes down or what have you then it can cause problems like yeast. & amp;nbsp; So every time I go in I tell them to check for BOTH. & amp;nbsp; It makes a big difference. & amp; nbsp; I think the reason I have been so sick for a year now is that our house has mold in it. & amp;nbsp; In fact I got so sick that I have left. & amp;nbsp; And honestly don't know what we are going to do about it. & amp;nbsp; I doubt we can afford to fix the problem. & amp;nbsp; And we can't afford to pay rent to live some where else AND mortgage. & amp;nbsp; So I'm in real dilemma. & amp;nbsp; " but this time my yeast came back as in thrush, like REALLY " BAD CASE. & amp;nbsp; And nothing seemed to be working on it. & amp;nbsp; It was really strange. & amp;nbsp; My son;s tongue also has a white look to it. & amp;nbsp; And nothing is clearing that up either. & amp;nbsp; Then my son, who is 3 got salmonella and we just got out of the hospital last Sunday. & amp;nbsp; he was up there for 4 days. & amp;nbsp; it was horrible. & amp;nbsp; he was passing blood and it was so scary. & amp;nbsp; But see, he is showing some signs that I have like his tongue and such...so I really think it is the house. & amp;nbsp; I've been tested for diabetes, AID (they automatically check you for that when you are pregnant), I've had cat scans, ultra sounds, colonoscopy, etc. and lots of blood work done etc,. & amp;nbsp; All comes back neg. except for yeast, garnderella and a proto zoa (sp) bug that i had un my gut. & amp;nbsp; & amp;nbsp; But all these things we ALL have but our body keeps them in check, mine just got out of control. & amp;nbsp; So I just try and work on building up my immune system and try to stick to mostly veggies and lean meat and that is about all I can do. & amp;nbsp; Mold can effect a persons immune system and I'm thinking that is what has happened. & amp;nbsp; who knows....... I feel like a rat in a maze and running around and getting no where fast. & amp;nbsp; Shonda

Guest guest
With 8 dogs, she doesn't have a doggy door installed? Also lysol is very chemically and will probably make you feel worse. Use natural cleaning products like vinegar. Look into training drops for dogs. I used these (a product by Hartz) which are drops that you put in the area you want the dog to go to the bathroom in. You take the dog to the area once to smell it, and afterwards they go in that area. I used those drops all the time to train my dog to only go to the bathroom in certain areas of the yard, and even trained her to go to the bathroom in a large litterbox I built when I had only a balcony (no backyard) and was gone for long periods of time. Group: curingcandida/ Website: http://www.naturallythriving.com Currently studying for Nutrition Certification and PhD in Psychology ----- Original Message ---- From: bbisquitt , & nbsp; I moved out of the house and the house is being tested right now. & nbsp; Shonda
Guest guest
Shonda, I hope everything works out for you. Does sound like a huge mess  At least you have your neighbor to help you, all dogs aside. . .lol! I went to a store to buy diatomaceous earth and the sales guy nearly keeled over when I said I plan to take it internally. He had never heard of the food-grade kind. Anyway, that store didn't have it and the co-op I called said to order it online, which I plan to do since I can get it for under $10 and it'll be a cheap way to determine if I have any parasites. Re: diatomaceous earth I had a horrid case of yeast down below for MONTHS on end. & amp;nbsp; then my neighbor told me to be checked for gardnerella cause they kept treating her for yeast too, but nothing seemed to work and she had gardnerella instead. & amp; nbsp; So I told my dr. to test me for this.
