Cleaning, fertilizing, irrigating and repairing the grass at the baseball diamond, softball field and other fields will cost an estimated $185,700. The district's insurance carrier, FM Global, will cover most of the damage beyond the $50,000 deductible, which will come out of the school district's general fund, said Tom Marshall, Washoe County School District's risk manager. Inside the school, 40 areas were damaged, including hallways, classrooms, offices and the large and small gymnasiums. Crews have been tearing down wet drywall and ripping out carpet to avoid mold problems. " This school is brand new, so any of the drywall and carpet that indicated any type of moisture we were moving, " Marshall said. " We're not taking any chances. " An intense storm June 21 dumped enough rain on the area that water and debris gushed down a hillside and into the school and neighborhoods below. The school served as a dam, blocking and absorbing much of the water rushing down the hillside, district spokesman Steve Mulvenon said. Water flooded into a computer room, but the damage was limited to network and electrical cables under the floor. School officials were relieved the damage to the large gym was relatively small at $10,000, even though water seeped underneath the basketball court and at one point covered the western section of the gym. It will cost an estimated $100,000, however, to dry out the gym to prevent further damage. The district called in crews from a Bay area branch of Munters, an international company that specializes in water damage recovery, to set up an elaborate dehumidification system. " If you look at the cost to dry it out, it's still pretty expensive, but I think it's well worth it, " Marshall said.
