Guest guest
Many may not know this, but both Whole Foods and Trader Joes are HORRIBLE with their overuse of MSG. They basically put it in every product they sell, disguised as one of the ingredients listed below. In case you didn't know what was up with MSG, its a neurotoxin, which means its toxic to the brain (!!) It along with Aspartame have been linked to developmental problems in children (ADD / ADHD, etc) as well as creating a lot of health problems for adults (heart and brain damage, headaches, obesity, cancer, damages to unborn fetuses, etc etc). Some info here: Three part video series = very informative: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2007/08/28/dangers-of-msg ..aspx Good list of common items that include MSG: http://www.inlightimes.com/archives/2007/05/msg.htm Links to MSG and cancer: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/01/17/can-chinese-fo od-cause-cancer.aspx And the good ol¹ FDA, always there to help us out: http://www.becomehealthynow.com/article/dietbad/32/ This is an extremely popular practice in packaged foods, and has been going on for decades in the traditional grocery store circuit. I mean with Kraft, Nabisco, etc = sure, I expect to get bad quality mainstream foods, loaded with chemicals. But Whole Foods is supposed to be just that! WHOLE FOODS. But they use the big ORGANIC word liberally, while piling on the MSG. All " Whole Foods 365 " brand products have MSG (with the exception of raw ingredients like nuts, lentils, etc). Examples: soy milk, soups, condiments, beverages, crackers, chips, etc etc. Basically its easier to find the items which do not have MSG, vs. the ones that do. And Trader Joe's is even worse!!! They even put it in JUICE!!! Freaking juice! Like that's not yummy enough. Trader Joe's has been doing this for years, and Whole Foods is just following in their footsteps. I thought that they would not succumb to this practice, but I guess in the end its not about health or quality products, its about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. While I admit to shopping at Whole Foods (cant go to Safeway!), I do not buy any of their branded products (nor any others which include MSG). And I have been boycotting Trader Joe's for years. I suggest you all do the same! -- Most common (and innocent sounding) hidden names for MSG: Spice (or spices) Natural Flavoring (or Natural Flavors) Yeast extract carrageenan hydrolyzed vegetable protein (or any hydrolyzed protein) Maltodextrin -- Complete list: ajinomoto aspartame autolyzed anything autolyzed yeast autolyzed yeast extract barley malt beef base beef flavoring beef stock bouillon broth calcium caseinate carrageenan caseinate chicken base chicken broth chicken flavoring chicken stock disodium caseinate citric acid disodium guanylate disodium inosinate dough conditioner(s) flavoring(s) gelatin gelatinized anything glutamate guar gum hydrolyzed anything hydrolyzed oat flour hydrolyzed plant protein hydrolyzed protein hydrolyzed vegetable protein kombu extract l-cysteine malt malt syrup malt flavoring(s) malt extract malted anything malted barley malted barley flour maltodextrin milk solids monosodium glutamate natural flavor(s) natural flavoring(s) nutrasweet pork base pork flavoring protein concentrate protein extract seasoned salt seasoning(s) smoke flavoring(s) sodium caseinate solids soup base soy extract soy protein soy protein concentrate soy protein isolate soy sauce spice(s) stock textured protein umami vegetable gum whey whey protein whey protein isolate whey protein concentrate yeast extract
Guest guest
, It looks like you put quite a lot of research into this posting. Can you tell me how they were able to replace the products (in name) below as MSG? This would be an illegal violation and some rather blatant mislabeling. I'm just curious how you managed to fing this out. Lyle... Guest guest
All the same, it's better to eat WHOLE foods. As soon as something is packaged you cannot be 100% if there are additives or not. With the exception of some emergency foods, we only shop of the outside rows of the grocery store and buy almost exclusively organic (not buying the packaged junk makes up for the few extra dollars of organic). Whenever I buy any packaged food, I always read the label and if there is too much other junk in it you can be sure there's MSG hidden somewhere too. I wish we had a Whole Foods store here. Even the health food store carries a few items with MSG. It's always, buyer beware. Can't blame the stores, they just give us the options. Not everyone is interested in health to the same degree. I can taste MSG immediately. I hate the stuff. It masks the flavor of the food. When I eat out I usually get a salad with no dressing or just some fresh lemon juice if they have it. The dressing makes me gag with all the MSG. Eating out is a bit of a nightmare if you want to stay healthy! Guest guest
I am having a difficult time ascertaining if you even know what MSG is!! Do you?? Some of those names don't even come close to what MSG is, Chemically. Do you have even a faint idea what it is?? It is a protein building block(amino acid) called glutamine that has been nutralized by sodium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate, so that it is now a salt, of glutamine and sodium. Table salt is hydrochloric acid nutralized by sodium hydroxide (lots of people call that LYE!) so why is it so bad for you. Can you explain it's effect on body tissues, or nervous system?? Glutaminic acid is a simple protein building block, and sodium is a powerful alkali, but when the two neutralize each other, they render each other somewhat harmless, just like Muriatic Acid (Hydrochloric Acid) and Sodium Chloride neutralize each other an make a rather innocuous compound, sodium Chloride, we call it table salt. Things do not always look as bad as they seem. > > Many may not know this, but both Whole Foods and Trader Joes are HORRIBLE > with their overuse of MSG. Guest guest
I don't know about msg. ly I don't worry about that particular substance because I eat few foods likely to contain it (as far as I can determine), and because I'm not allergic to it. Amy's and other organic processed/combination foods usually contain sea salt, so I personally don't use them. In fact, nearly 100% of the so-called healthier alternatives to common processed foods do contain sea salt or carrageenan, or algins so I can't eat them. The sole sea salt containing food I consume is the original (no soybeans) Ezekial bread, and I limit that strictly, and do not eat it every day. sol Buddy A. Guest guest
Hi Tiki, I suggest you take a look at some of the work of Dr. Blaylock (author " Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills " and Erb (author " The Slow Poisoning of America " ). A good website to explore would be http://www.truthinlabeling.org/. You might even take a look at The Glutamate Association's website at http://www.msgfacts.com/. This is a website for a group who promotes MSG. Take a look at some of the ways in which they encourage its use (like inducing obesity in lab rats). Cheers, Robin Re: Trader Joe's+Whole Foods put MSG in everything! I am having a difficult time ascertaining if you even know what MSG is!! Do you??
