Mold is common in all homes, and always has been. Most is harmless. But today's homes are more airtight than ever, and they can trap moisture that mold needs to thrive. Here are tips from the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) on ways you can reduce excess moisture that could promote mold in your home: .. Fix roof and plumbing leaks immediately. Be sure to remove wet insulation from attics and wall cavities. .. Be sure there's no water in your crawlspace, and ventilate beneath your home year round. .. Keep the drip pans under your air conditioner and refrigerator clean and dry. .. Wash mold off hard surfaces and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as drywall, ceiling tiles and carpet may have to be replaced. .. Vent bathrooms, kitchens and clothes dryers properly to the outside. Don't carpet bathrooms. .. When painting, add mold inhibitors to paint.
