-- Re:armour thyroid

I had a book with a letter to you doctor. It was by Heller I

think. Maybe called Thyroid Power. So the first endo I saw, I asked

him to read it and he agreed to put me on a clinical trial of Armour he

usually perscribed Synthroid. However, he started me at 15 mg (mcg?)

and after two weeks I upped my dose.He didn't want to see me for 6

months. I made an appointment for 1 month but I had to have my blood

work done again. Every month I went thru the same crap with him and

finally after 4-5 months he wanted me to lower my dosage when I wanted

to increase it. I was at 45 mg (mcg?) and he suggested I see someone

else. He would not treat me further. So I called my old doc (DO) who I

had not been able to get hold of for 2 YEARS and actually got an

appointment and he put me right on 60 mg (mcg?) (equal to 1 grain) .

Somewhere there was a listing (website) where you could look for a doc

who would prescribe Armour in you area. Maybe some one else knows?

thyroid blood tests--TSH and T3 and T4 ( totals and subsets) will give you an

idea...SOME with Lyme do have thyroid issues and they sometimes clear up as tx

continues...its not " most " though.

http://thyroid.about.com/cs/newsinfo/l/aa080100a.htm

http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/t/thyroid/intro.htm

and the better site

http://www.endocrineweb.com/thyroid.html

Hair can fall out due to illness and even meds, stress, diet etc

Samento is hyped and whiole herb Cats Claw is often better(and cheaper too)

as for herbs the lymeaid buhner group would have better ideas.

as for the Armour thyroid--it may still be pig based --if thats an issue Id

check--here is their website

http://www.armourthyroid.com/hcp_aboutArmour.aspx

be very careful as thryoid levels are serious and you need good professional

advice to keep them balanced.this sint a do-it-yourself type of thing

with herbs there is a LOT of confusion--i.e. Pinella vs Pinellia vs

Piniella--VERY importnat to have the scientific species name

pinellia is for phlegm and prevent vomiting-Im? unsure why youd need that

http://www.e2121.com/herb_db/viewherb.php3?viewid=422 & setlang=

Pinella

for liver(unsure of specifics and may be confused with the Pinellia) and weight

loss combos

please be sure of which you refer to and try a good herbal site or herbalist--be

aware many herbs are like meds and theyll interact or cause side effects!!

Does anyone know what armour Thyroid is. how would you know if you

needed to use it?Doesn't lyme affect the thyroid on most people and how

would one know if it is affecting the thyroid? I have been noticing

that my hair is falling out? Also I am taking samento and I heard one

could take pinella with this. I am not sure what pinella is supposed

to do. thanks

Yep, NatureThroid and Westhroid are not lactose free either.

They are called " hypoallergenic " but honestly, they have more chemicals in them

than Armour, but some people tolerate them better. The problem is that the

lactose is part of the porcine thyroid powder stuff used to make the pills.

This is the company that makes it: http://www.westernresearchlaboratories.com/

Inactive Ingredients:

Microcrystalline Cellulose – Synthetically derived fiber base (similar to

plant-derived). It is typically utilized as a filler in a tablet (to provide

volume and bulk).

Dicalcium Phosphate – Derived from a mined ore. It is typically utilized as a

binder in a tablet (to hold all the ingredients during compression).

Colloidal Silicon Dioxide – Derived from a mined ore. It is typically utilized

as a natural desiccant in a tablet (to provide barrier from moisture and

humidity).

Sodium Starch Glycolate – Synthetically derived starch molecule (similar to

potato starch). It is typically utilized as a disintegrating agent in a tablet

(to aid in proper disintegration of the tablet in the stomach).

Magnesium Stearate – Derived from a vegetable source (typically palm oil). It is

typically utilized as a lubricating agent in a tablet (to aid in proper

compression of the tablet).

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose - Derived from a plant cellulose base (typically

cotton blend and or wood pulp). It is typically utilized as a granulating agent

in a tablet (to provide bulk and density to the tablet for proper compression)

as well as part of a clear coating solution (with PEG).

Stearic Acid – Derived from a vegetable source (typically palm oil). It is

typically utilized as a binder in a tablet (to hold all the ingredients during

compression).

Carnauba Wax – Derived from the pores of the leaves of the Brazilian wax palm

tree. It is utilized in the final stage in tablet coating (to provide a complete

seal).

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) – Synthetically derived. It is utilized with

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose as part of the clear coating solution.

Lactose Monohydrate* - Present in traceable amount as part of Thyroid USP

(diluent).

Armour has less ingredients than these two. If you feel you want to switch him,

the doc can write up a script and the pharmacy can order it.

And synthetic synthroid has food coloring....

Just an FYI, I assume you mean lactose. Lactose is casein free. It is milk

SUGAR, casein is one of the milk PROTEINS. So the Armour appears casein free,

just not lactose free.

If it causes problems, you can try taking it with lactase enzyme, see if that

helps.

Thanks to both of you. He has been on Armour for over a year and has done well,

grew alot. The pharmacies are having some kind of backorder issues with the

Armour and I was told about the other stuff, don't really see the need to switch

him, he is only on 1/4 grain per day.

Thanks again,

J.

It is my sister in law that was on it. It was working great and then

they said they can't get it anymore. Not sure what she is on now, but

she is having a really bad reaction from whatever it is. I will try

to find out.

I have been taking Armour for about 2 years now and recently my pharmacy has

been on back order.  So I went to a compound pharmacy and they were able to make

it for me.  You may want to look into that as an option.

Maureen- we will have it compounded- but is it very similiar to what Armour is??

we never started Armour and my son's test will most likely show hypothyroid this

afternoon at the visit- so I want to know what to ask for- this doc does

normally prescribe Armour- he was on the web's list of docs- but I need to go in

with knowledge:).

As far as I know it is.  It was a friend of mine that told me her doctor is the

one that said she could get it from a compound pharmacy b/c most regular

pharmacies don't have it anymore.  I know Armour has both T3 and T4 in it.  I

believe most traditional doctors prescribe Synthroid which is the most common

Thyroid medicine but it only contains T4.

I hope this helps.

She can get dessicated thyroid from a compounding pharmacy.

Rather than taking synthetic T4 which ultimately leaves you hypothyroid.

What did Dr recommend for hypothyroidism?

I have taken Armour thyroid for years and not it is completely out of

stock and there is no telling when or if it will be made again.
