Guest guest
Problems Delay First Classes At 3 Schools Tue Aug 13, 8:56 AM ET Problems at three local schools have forced officials to delay the start of the school year. Mold was discovered recently at the School For Creative and Performing Arts in Over-the-Rhine, WLWT Eyewitness News 5's London reported. The first day of school has been pushed back three days to Aug. 26 while workers remove the mold, London reported. Officials said the mold is believed to be similar to the type of mold found on a shower curtain. It was found in more than 10 classrooms on three floors of the building, London reported. " It's an upside for us. It's a situation where we're going to be in a better place, " principal Jeff Brokamp said. The cleanup will cost the school district around $102,000, London reported. School officials said the missed days will be made up during the year. This isn't the only Tri-State school to suffer delays. Construction delays in the Owen County schools forced district officials to change the first day of classes from Aug. 14 to Aug. 19, WLWT reported. Also, students at Holmes Alternative School in Covington will get an extra week of summer while crews remove asbestos from the building. The school year was scheduled to begin Aug. 19, but it has been pushed back to Aug. 19. The asbestos was discovered over the summer when crews renovated the floor above the school, which is located in the basement of an old YMCA building on Pike Street. The floor renovation work dislodged asbestos from the ceiling in the school, according to a statement from the district. WLWT Eyewitness News 5 and ChannelCincinnati.com will continue to update this story as additional information becomes available.
