Harper.....Calcium is one of the things I was completely ignorant of when on pred & I never asked nor was informed about supplements by my hep specialist. When I was dx with osteoporosis, twice Ive asked my GP about calcium supplements and both times she has said they wouldnt do any good. Ive actually met a brick wall and I will do a search as Ive been told by a friend that these supplements arent available here because of cost. So any info you have Id welcome as I shall take the drug info with me next time I see the doctor.  Also,  there are a lot of over the counter calcium products, does anyone take these without a docs approval or prescription?

Love Jan

Jan, I think most AIH people who take calcium use 1500 mg daily. The tablets I used to take had Vitamin D added. Vitamin D makes the calcium more effective. Calcium tablets are very inexpensive. Too much calcium is harmful, but you aren't very likely to run into that. I was surprised at your doctor saying calcium supplements wouldn't do any good. I think they won't help bone loss that has already occurred, but they help prevent future bone loss. As I understand it, drugs like Fosamax can also help repair bones, to a limited extent. If you would like me to, I'll be glad to send you the New York Times article. I can cut and paste and send it directly to your address.

Eating calcium-rich foods (dairy products, leafy greens, etc.) helps. Getting load-bearing exercise helps.

Bone loss is very serious. A member of our group, someone who hasn't written for a long time, has had devastating problems with bone loss. I won't describe them except to say they could be life-threatening.

In very basic terms, perhaps over-simplifying because it's late and I'm lazy, Prednisone causes calcium to be leached from the bones. I've always assumed any doctor who wasn't forgetful automatically "prescribed" calcium with Prednisone.

Hi Jan,

I think I may have already mentioned this to you, but my endocrinologist

strongly recommends Caltrate (an over the counter calcium supplement) and

Ostelin 1000 (Vitamin D) for my osteoporosis. Caltrate with Vitamin D is

also available, but he says I need the Ostelin because my Vitamin D is

really low and there is not enough in the Caltrate. I questioned him about

the Caltrate because a friend who is into natural therapies had said it is

not the best, but the doctor's opinion is that it is the best for my

particular problem.

I have an appointment with him on Wednesday because at present my Calcium

level is too high and my Gastro has taken me off it. I'm also off Actonel

because it seems that even though it hasn't got calcium in it, it can

increase the calcium in the body. I want to know how all this impacts on my

osteoporosis and if there is anything else I could/should do for it. If you

would like me to throw in a question or two about it on your behalf, please

let me know.

I would NEVER use collodial silver after what I read about it. People turn

BLUE from it. It's also poisonous.

Luanne, do you believe everything you read?

As Harvey would say you need to read The Rest of The Story.

Many will say the same about DMSO and I use it all the time for many years.

Wow. Maybe you should read something besides the National Inquirer.

Try reading all past posts from Dr 's group so we don't all have to repeat

ourselves on the benefits of CS.
