I think this varies for each person. I can tell you about myself; what I first began to notice. About four months after we moved into the apartment, I started to wake up in the middle of the night having terrible coughing fits. I also smelled smells like wet concrete coming from somewhere but did'nt know where. One day, I drank strawberry/kiwi fruit juice. I got real sick, like I was losing my mind or something. I called the 1-800 number on the bottle and they took my info. Several hours later the feeling disappeared. The next day I got a call from the juice company asking me if I was allergic to molds. They had checked into it and thought that maybe some moldy strawberries got into the process. I told them I did'nt know if I was. Later, I realized that this was a significant clue that I did'nt put together at the time. At night, I began to see lights in my eyes when I was trying to go to sleep in a dark bedroom, this never happenned before, but again, I dispelled it. Then after a couple of months our brand new carpet started looking 20 years old and smelled funny, like a gym locker room or something. A short time later I began breaking out with skin infections that would not respond to first aid treatment and grew into deeper more severe skin infections in about 5 days. I hit them with everything, but could'nt stop them. Each time I ended up having them burned out with a lazer as an out patient. I also began to feel like I was losing my mind shortly after I would enter the apartment. When I would leave and take a drive in the fresh air, I would start to feel better again. When my wife would come home, she said that she would grow real tired , like she had Mono or something. It hits people different ways. When we left all that, my skin infections healed up on their own with no medical help. My mind also cleared after a week or so. I should also mention that we had to change our shower curtain every week. Within a week, it would be covered with black mold of some kind. Both of us, toward the end had breathing problems, my xrays showed I had pneumonia, but both of us felt like someone was standing on our chests, I would be out of breath just walking up a short flight of stairs, and before this started, I was walking 2 miles, three times a week. Everything, got better when we broke cleanly away from the molds and our contaminated possessions. Until then, it was a non-ending horrible spiral downwards. As I said, it is different for each person, and it depends on what kind of molds are there. We had Stachybotrys and three other ones, but I've talked with people who have had Stachy, Aspergillis, Penicillium, plus a host of others. They must have really gone through hell. The best thing to do is get a lab in there to find out what's in your place, and if it's even toxic, and if you do have a problem, talk to people who really know and are state certified to deal with toxic molds. There are some remeadiators out there that take advantage of you fears and try to rip you off, while you're trying to sort all of this out. This almost happenned to me, but I avoided this by researching it out for myself. I'm sure there are some genuine remeadiators out there somewhere, but the one that was trying to "work" me was a crackpot who knew very little about molds, and nothing about sterilization techniques. He had no real training other than a take home course that briefly covered molds. How can someone like that help people out of these situations? He was trying to charge me $9000 to do some crackpot job of it! I hope I've helped you, I really can only tell you what we went through, other people I'm sure had different experiences. I hope they also post a message for you; good luck, I hope you don't have any toxic molds.
