Cancer on Long Island September 5, 2002 To the Editor: " Epidemic That Wasn't " (news article, Aug. 29) states that the breast cancer rates on Long Island " are not much different from those of the rest of the country. " If the breast cancer rates on Long Island reflect the national occurrence, then our country is in a sorry state. On Long Island, we know of too many unexplained breast cancer diagnoses of family, friends and neighbors. We wonder who might be next. Signs in our lingerie shops say " Mastectomy Bras Sold Here, " and breast surgeons' offices are crowded. This is not an acceptable way for residents of Long Island or any other place to live. Since fewer than 10 percent of all breast cancer incidences are attributable to family history and more than 50 percent are of unknown cause, our polluted environment remains suspect. We must push for more environmental research. Let's not dismiss a national public health crisis as mythology.
